Nickelodeon has been providing viewers with some of the best content in children’s television since its inception in 1979. The channel is best known for its incredibly popular cartoons. Nickelodeon also produces some of the best counterprogramming to Disney Channel’s live-action programs.

Since its first success with Hey Dude in 1989, Nickelodeon has created over forty sitcoms. Each has its own unique concept and stars some of the channel’s most well-known personalities. 10 True Jackson, VP Showed Off Keke Palmer’s Comedic Acting

In late 2008, Nickelodeon premiered its Keke Palmer-led show, True Jackson, VP. True Jackson follows a teenager who becomes the Vice President of the Youth Department at the clothing brand, Mad Style. True Jackson ran for sixty episodes. It starred Bucket & Skinner’s Ashley Argota as Lulu, and The Real O’Neals’ Matt Shively as Ryan.

True Jackson, VP received multiple accolades during its original broadcast, including five NAACP Awards for its writing and for Keke Palmer’s outstanding performance. Producer Andy Gordon would go on to produce other popular sitcoms like Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory.

9 Unfabulous Followed An Aspiring Songwriter Through Middle School

One of the channel’s most underrated sitcoms is Unfabulous. Unfabulous starred Emma Roberts as thirteen-year-old aspiring songwriter, Addie Singer. It follows her relationships and adventures in middle school. It debuted in 2004 and ran for forty-one episodes until 2007.

Despite not winning any awards during its time on air, Unfabulous was incredibly popular during its time slot and kickstarted Emma Roberts’ acting and musical career. Unfabulous’ various songs, which were sung by Roberts, were compiled in a soundtrack album called Unfabulous And More.

8 Big Time Rush Centered On A Boy Band’s Adventures In Hollywood

In an effort to emulate the same success that Disney Channel had with the Jonas Brothers, Nickelodeon partnered up with Columbia Records to produce Big Time Rush. Big Time Rush is a sitcom that followed a newly-formed boy band as they moved to Hollywood and discovered the ups and downs of fame.

Big Time Rush combined music, slapstick, and Nickelodeon’s signature comedy. It starred Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos Peña Jr., and Logan Henderson. Big Time Rush ran for seventy-four episodes from 2009 to 2013 and had a TV movie, Big Time Movie, which premiered in early 2012.

Before being a teenage witch, Melissa Joan Hart had her first leading role as Clarissa Darling in Nick’s Clarissa Explains It All. The 1991 series follows a teenage girl and her experiences with relationships and growing up. Unlike other sitcoms, the main character would often break the fourth wall, sharing her feelings and insight with the viewer.

Clarissa Explains It All was notable for its realistic take on female adolescence, which tended to be either exaggerated or non-existent in similar ’90s sitcoms. Its highly popular five seasons have received multiple broadcasts over the years, finding a semi-permanent slot in Nickelodeon’s late-night program, NickRewind.

After making her Nickelodeon debut in All That, Jamie Lynn Spears went on to star in one of the channel’s most successful comedy-dramas, Zoey 101. The sixty-one-episode series followed Zoey Brooks, a new student at the Pacific Coast Academy, and the friends she made at the school.

Zoey 101’s ensemble cast, which included a pre-Victorious Victoria Justice, won multiple awards for their outstanding performance in the show. Unlike other popular Nick shows which relied on laugh tracks and slapstick, Zoey 101 had a much more mature quality and subtler comedy. Following her breakout role in Drake & Josh, Miranda Cosgrove received her first main role as Carly Shay in iCarly. The original Nick show ran for six seasons and was nominated for an Emmy five times.
