10 Bleach
Spanning 366 episodes across a nine-year run from 2004 to 2012, Bleach was an essential piece of Toonami and Adult Swim’s programming that helped expose shounen anime to Western audiences. Bleach remains highly relevant to this day, as it was announced the manga’s final story-arc would be receiving an anime series in November 2021.
Bleach follows the story of Ichigo, as he grows from an ordinary human being to end up becoming an extremely powerful Soul Reaper. He is tasked with the protection of the innocent from all sorts of ghastly creatures while learning the ins and outs of the spiritual world.
9 Death Note
Death Note features the teen genius Light Yagami and his discovery of the infamous book named “Death Note”. This book allows its owner to kill anyone, with the condition that the author knows both the face and name of the victim.
Light’s vigilante work attracts the attention of the local authorities, most notably the detective L, making his crusade against the criminals of Japan all the more difficult. While 37 episodes may seem minimal in comparison to other entries in this list, Death Note managed to tell a very compelling story and is one of the best single-season anime series ever.
8 Black Clover
In a world where seemingly everyone has magic powers, life is difficult for a young Asta who seems to be utterly powerless. This is particularly true when his best friend Yuno appears to be a genius-the-making in terms of magical ability.
Black Clover is off to a hot start following its release in 2017, already having published 140 episodes in spite of pandemic-related interruptions. Crunchyroll named Black Clover as the most-watched anime of 2020, as fans tuned in to see Asta and Yuno race to become Wizard King.
7 My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia takes a lot of themes present in many other shonen anime series and puts its own spin on things. People with superhuman abilities are common in Izuku Midoriya’s world, and he’s determined to become a superhero himself one day — despite not actually having any powers of his own.
The show has developed a big following online, as fans have developed favorite students in the academy. Many of the students progress in hopes of becoming a hero just like the unstoppable All Might, while others such as Katsuki go on to develop a rivalry with Izuku.
6 Naruto
It should come as no surprise to see one of the most popular anime of all time on this list, as Naruto ranks sixth amongst all shounen series of all time. Naruto’s journey from orphan to hopeful Hokage has many bumps along the road but is one all viewers can relate to in some form. He takes many losses on the road to success, which helps explain the show’s great rewatch value.
Naruto is a shinobi who has been cursed with great power at the cost of losing his parents and being socially outcast long before he ever had the chance to know them. The worldbuilding of Naruto is spectacular, as the characters, costumes, and ninjutsu all still remain very relevant in the world of pop culture nearly 20 years after its first episode aired.
5 Naruto: Shippuden
While the original Naruto series covered 220 episodes worth of manga material, Naruto: Shippuden expands on the source material in a big way and adds an additional 500 episodes of content. Shippuden takes place 3 years after Naruto departs to train with Jiraiya, and as such, the power levels of most of the characters involved have drastically increased.
This allows for the series to stage much more extravagant battles with incredible powers, particularly against the series’ main threat in the Akatsuki. Shippuden allows for much of the main cast to develop further and reach satisfying conclusions to their character arcs, so it makes sense that this series would be so beloved by fans.
4 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
It should be noted that the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood released in 2009 is not an expansion of the original Fullmetal Alchemist from 2003, but rather an entire remake of the manga. The latter experienced a longer 64 episode run (as opposed to 51 episodes of the former) and featured many stylistic differences.
Brotherhood focuses on Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric’s mission to restore their broken bodies after an attempt to revive their mother via alchemy goes wrong. Brotherhood is also much more faithful to the source material, even to the point where both series feature different central antagonists.
3 Attack On Titan
Few things are as disturbing in shounen anime as the titan creatures featured in Attack On Titan. These monstrosities are responsible for much of the conflict throughout the series, and the havoc they are capable of wreaking on the citizens of the Shiganshina District is showcased right from the very first episode.
There’s much more than meets the eye with these titans, however, as their mysteries slowly unravel through the series’ 75 existing episodes. Attack on Titan is a show that blurs the lines between good and evil, leaving fans anxiously awaiting the series finale. The second half and final 16 episodes of Attack On Titan are set to air in January 2022, where Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and the rest of the heroes hope to finally settle their feud for good.
2 One Piece
One Piece recently made news for famously airing its 1000th episode, a feat very few series have ever achieved in anime history. In fact, the show is currently ranked 7th all-time in total runtime of all types of anime ever.
Following along with Luffy and his band of pirates, One Piece never fails to deliver interesting arcs en route to his ultimate goal of becoming the pirate king. An enormous cast featuring interesting main characters and villains including Roronoa Zoro, Nami, and Donquixote Doflamingo is a big reason why the series has captured fans’ attention for so long.
1 Hunter x Hunter
As the overwhelming favorite in the Ranker poll, Hunter x Hunter is well-deserving of its top spot. This series originally aired in Japan in 1999 before a hard reboot in 2011 that only hit English airwaves in 2016. As such, it is at the forefront of many anime fans’ minds and is one of the most prominent shounen anime right now.
Hunter x Hunter follows best friends Gon Freeccs and Killua Zoldyck as each of the pair journeys to become a Hunter, just like Gon’s estranged father. The series has caught up to the manga’s current source material, but fans are still holding out hope for a season 7 in the future.
