There have even been some original superheroes that have been tailor-made for the interactive medium.

10 Comix Zone Was One Of The Genesis’ Swan Songs

Visually impressive as it is brutally difficult, Comix Zone served as a great swan song to the dying Sega Genesis alongside Ristar and Phantasy Star IV. The game was a scrolling beat ’em up where players traversed through panels of a comic while battling supervillains and solving devious puzzles.

Since Sketch became part of the printed world, every action that involved damaging parts of the page depleted his health. Players couldn’t die even once in this adventure, lest they wish to start the whole game all over again. The comic book presentation is captured beautifully with word bubbles appearing over sprites and onomatopoetic “POW!” signs accompanying devastating blows.

There are plenty of comic buffs who have misty-eyed memories of sketching their own hero while daydreaming in school, and City of Heroes gave those people a means to bring those creations to life. City of Heroes was an MMO where players took on quests and gained new superpowers when they leveled up.

Heroes traveled through Paragon City while villains went through The Rogue Isles. Character customization proved to be both intuitive and highly flexible, eclipsing even later efforts such as DC Universe Online. Five different “origins” for players’ powers determined what type of upgrades they could unlock as they progressed.

6 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time Is An Arcade Classic

Konami gained a reputation among gamers for their multitude of solid licensed arcade beat-’em-ups such as The Simpsons and X-Men. A follow-up to their first coin-operated game with the heroes in a half shell, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time sees the fiercest fighting team traveling through different periods in history to tangle with the likes of the Shredder and his legion of Foot Clan ninjas.

The combat in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time was refined, the visuals and animations were more detailed, and the levels became more diverse thanks to the game’s time-traveling premise.

5 Dragon Ball FighterZ Is Every Fan’s Wish Come True

Following a tsunami of licensed titles that ranged from horrible to decent, Arc System Works’ Dragon Ball FighterZ is the game that anime fans had long been waiting for. Much like Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, players pick a team of three characters to duke it out in a suitably flashy and over-the-top manner that could only be achieved through Akira Toriyama’s cast.

Dragon Ball FighterZ brilliantly captures the look and feel of the anime with its cel-shaded visuals, stunning animation, and authentic voice-overs from the anime’s cast.

4 The Cosmic Ranger Laughs At Danger In Astro Boy Omega Factor

Treasure’s pedigree of high-octane action titles and 16-bit classics made them the perfect fit for a game starring Osamu Tezuka’s pre-pubescent fighting robot. Astro Boy Omega Factor may contain tons of references and cameos from the aforementioned Tezuka’s lineage, but such reverence towards the source material is not needed to enjoy this quality beat-’em-up.

With a combat system that’s easy to grasp, enemies that are tough as nails, and a wonderful retro presentation, Astro’s adventure in Astro Boy Omega Factor is one of the best offerings that can be played on the Game Boy Advance.

3 Freedom Force Kapows In Real-Time

Taking the look of a Silver Age Comic Book and incorporating it in a gaming genre that has been largely ignored by superheroes, Freedom Force delivered justice through Real-Time Tactics. Players took control of a multitude of super-powered characters with their own archetypes and abilities. Each one of these champions of justice could be upgraded following a successful mission.

Freedom Force also incorporated cutscenes that utilized still drawings in order to evoke the feeling of a superhero comic. It was one of the earliest titles developed by the now-shuttered Irrational Studios, which gained fame for the Bioshock games.

2 Hedeki Kamiya Delivers A Red-Hot Kick In Viewtiful Joe

Following up on mature titles such as Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry, Hideki Kamiya’s next effort in the directorial seat would be something much more lighthearted, but no less brutally challenging. Invoking images and tropes from costumed tokusatsu media and mixing them with Western comic books, Viewtiful Joe put players in control of a superhero buff who gets transported to a movie world.

With the power of the V-watch, players could slow time, speed up to give Joe’s punches a fiery kick, or zoom in to intimidate foes. These abilities would also come in handy when solving several of Viewtiful Joe’s puzzles.

1 Infamous 2 Gives Heroes A Great Sandbox To Traverse

Infamous 2 saw the series at its peak. It addresses most of the gameplay flaws of its predecessor, boasts a livelier setting than Empire City, and adds a more challenging ethical dilemma. After defeating Kessler, Cole learns of a beast that aims to snuff out all human life. He and his friends retreat to New Marais in order to heal up and become strong enough to face this threat.

Infamous 2 was a sandbox title where players could harness Cole’s powers to traverse through the city and battle evil conduits. New additions included a device that allowed Cole to perform better melee attacks and new morality-aligned powers which utilize fire and ice.
