10 Biggest Ways Blues Clues Changed After Steve Left

Blue’s Clues is undoubtedly one of the greatest preschool programs in the history of television. It’s sweet and wholesome, but still has room to be fun and playful. It’s seen life in the Nickelodeon universe for decades now and, hopefully, there’s no end in sight.

The memories of Blue’s Clues held by most are centered around when Steve was the host of the show. Steve was an excellent leader for the educational series, but at the end of season four, he did depart for college. From there, the show has always been lovely, but has never quite been the same. It’s experienced a great many changes since Steve left in April 2002.

10 New Instrumentation

Steve’s hosting duties were anchored by various instruments that supported his actions and thinking processes. When new host Joe (more on him later) entered the mix, fresh instrumentation underscored the series.

Different drumrolls, tuba sounds, altered lyrics to “The So Long Song.” They were all a part of the revamped musical identity of the series from season five onward.

9 New Credits

Traditionally, when Steve was the host of Blue’s Clues, the credits for each episode would flip past the screen as if they were included in a storybook. It was a charming way to pay homage to all who worked on the show.

After Steve left, though, the credits scrolled upwards on the screen in a much more basic fashion. It’s unclear why this change was made, but it came after Steve left all the same.

8 Sentient Clues

Whenever Steve would draw the clues in his handy-dandy notebook, he would show us the steps of his artistic ability. Additionally, the clues would exist as drawings and nothing more.

Joe, however, had a different style of keeping track of his clues. They would later appear enchantingly in the notebook on their own and would occasionally dance and speak with sentience. It’s not what fans were used to, but it was still cute.

7 We Sat On Down

In addition to different instrumentation, Steve’s departure from Blue’s Clues also brought in some new songs to help shake up the identity of the series. This was evident in the change from “We Just Figured Out Blue’s Clues” to “We Sat On Down.”

Nothing can top those original songs, especially since the former was more playful and distinct. The latter was a bit more forgettable, but it suited Joe, at the very least.

6 Another Blue’s Clues Day

Another song that entered the mix of Blue’s Clues was “Another Blue’s Clues Day.” It was an interesting theme song that helped to set the mood when Blue skidooed at the beginning of each episode.

It’s unclear if this was a necessary addition to the show, but it was at least marked by more specificity than “We Sat On Down.” Of the new songs in the series, this one was absolutely the best.

5 Sage And Ginger

Considering that, aside from Steve (and a fun appearance from Wynonna Judd in a holiday episode), the characters on Blue’s Clues were largely animated, there wasn’t a need to replace anyone else.

Instead, the cartoon population was allowed to grow. Steve was around for the development of the spice family when Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper had Paprika and Cinnamon. But in a new reboot of the show (more on that later), they have Sage and Ginger, who are twins!

4 A Spin-Off Of Puppets

After Steve left, the Blue’s Clues brand continued to expand. From 2004 to 2007, a short-lived spin-off of Blue’s Clues hit the airwaves, entitled Blue’s Room.

It only had seventeen episodes, but it was a major departure from the series viewers had known until that point. It was more oriented around the colorful characters young fans were drawn to. Except this time, they were all puppets! It was a cute style, but not as viable a format as the original series.

3 CGI Reboot

A different style for depicting the characters also came in the 2019 reboot of the series, Blue’s Clues & You! Currently, this reboot of the series is still on the air and it definitely strikes the chords of old Blue’s Clues magic.

The animation is CGI, but it’s conducted in a manner that is respectful to the original series. It’s like the new SpongeBob movies that use new technology to enhance the storytelling, rather than stretch for a cheap cash grab.

2 Joshua (And Nostalgia)

The host of the new Blue’s Clues reboot is Joshua, who fits the sensibility of the show perfectly. With Joshua came a return to the classic Blue’s Clues style, as well as a return for many fans who have now grown up.

Blue’s Clues & You! took the approach of Jurassic World or The Force Awakens by bringing back beloved fan favorites from the past. Steve made his first appearance as Steve in years on the reboot! This was the best kind of nostalgia.

Before Joshua, though, there was Joe, who came after Steve. Joe lasted from 2002 to 2006 and was portrayed by Donovan Patton (whereas Steve was actually Steve Burns). He had the unruly task of filling some massive shoes in the home.

Steve will probably always be the best since he was the original host who dictated what the format would be. But Joe did a pretty good job, all things considered. No change on the series was bigger than this initial one, though. Joe’s vibes changed the entire feel of Blue’s Clues, while still being reverent to what Steve had created before him.
