10 Britcoms to Stream Right Now

It’s a well-known fact that when it comes to comedy (and drama), the Brits really do it better, with crisper writing, sharper performances, and tighter plotting. Maybe it’s because their comedies have fewer episodes, so that the writers have more time to focus on what makes a show really funny rather than focusing so much on fluff.

Maybe it’s because their actors tend to be better than their American counterparts. Whatever the case, it is absolutely true that Britcoms will keep you in stitches for hours. Here are ten of them that you can stream right now.

10 The IT Crowd

It’s currently available on Amazon Prime, Britbox, and Hulu

Created by Roy Clarke, also known as the creator of Last of the Summer Wine, it shows the attempts of overbearing Hyacinth Bucket (Patricia Routledge) and her long-suffering husband to climb the social ladder. Although she’s made it from her lower class upbringing into the lower levels of the middle class with her marriage to Richard Bucket— which Hyacinth insists is pronounced Bouquet over Richard’s protestations that it was always said like it was spelled before they were married— Hyacinth still constantly attempts to be accepted by the upper class.

7 Blackadder

Rowan Atkinson of Mr. Bean fame heads up the cast of this show as the titular Edmund Blackadder. We follow Blackadder’s descendants (and those of his dogsbody Baldrick) through time, as each series shows them in a different historical period. The main series- The Black Adder, Blackadder II, Blackadder the Third, and Blackadder Goes Forth- follow them through the Middle Ages, the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the Regency, and the First World War respectively.

In each series the pair must cope with a not-so-bright member of the ruling classes. Lord Percy Percy serves as the foil in the first two series, followed by the Prince Regent and dimwitted Lieutenant George (both played by Hugh Laurie) in the third and fourth. It’s currently available on Britbox and Hulu.

4 The Thick of It

If Armando Iannucci is familiar to Americans, it’s as creator of the HBO hit VEEP starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. He created The Thick of It first- VEEP is essentially an American retelling of this earlier show. It follows a completely fictional government department as the minister in charge stumbles his way through the job. Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who) plays an official sent by the Prime Minister with the intent to make sure the department is doing their job.

The show aired from 2005-2012 on BBC Four and BBC Two. It’s currently available on Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Britbox.

3 Fleabag

This Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series was created and written Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who stars as well. Fleabag (Waller-Bridge) is a young woman in London who doesn’t have the smoothest life. She butts heads with nearly everyone in the series, including her sister Claire, her father, and her father’s girlfriend and their godmother, played by Oliva Colman. Although Fleabag’s actions are morally questionable at best, her addresses to the audience and internal narrations show that (sometimes, at least) her heart is in the right place.

Originally airing on BBC One and Two, it was co-produced with Amazon Prime, who have exclusive streaming rights.

2 Derry Girls

Set in Derry, Northern Ireland in the 1990s during the end of the Troubles, it shows a group of girls at a Catholic school as they navigate every thing that it means to be a teen, as well as everything that it means to grow up in Northern Ireland as decades of anger and violence was winding down- although being teens, the most pressing issues for them are the cliques and drama surrounding their own small parts of life.

Starting in 2018, it’s still currently airing. It’s currently available on Netflix.

1 The Inbetweeners

In some ways the English, suburban, and male precursor of Derry Girls, this show was a hit when it premiered. It follows a group of teen boys as they navigate being lads, banter, and school. Rules-follower Will narrates the show after moving from a private school to the rowdier public school and meeting his new crowd of sometimes immature but always funny friends.

Airing on E4 from 2008 to 2010, it’s also seen two films, two books, and a failed American reboot. It’s currently available to stream on Netflix.
