When Hustlers hit theaters in 2019, it took some fans by surprise. The movie, which on the outside was about strippers, ended up an empowering heist flick with and an award-worthy Jennifer Lopez performance. It helps that it was a movie about women made by women, but it ended up as a critical success.
There is a lot in this movie, from strong females to a great heist, but the item that most people noticed right off in the trailer was it was a movie about strippers. 10 MAGIC MIKE (2012)
When it comes to critical acclaim, the male stripper franchise Magic Mike has to top the list. It shouldn’t come as a surprise since it was directed by indie filmmaking legend Steven Soderbergh, who himself is one of Jennifer Lopez’s earliest supporters as an actress, casting her in his movie Out of Sight.
The first movie hit in 2012, based on a story that Channing Tatum came up with dealing with his early career as a male stripper before he became a successful actor. The movie told the story of young male stripper introduces into the risque and partying lifestyle.
9 MAGIC MIKE XXL (2015)
Despite a new director taking over the sequel, Magic Mike XXL improved on the original. Most of the cast returned, including Channing Tatum, Kevin Nash, and Joe Manganiello, although Matthew McConaughey chose not to return.
The second movie in the franchise started three years after Mike left the lifestyle of a male stripper while still at the top of the business. The film then sees his partners in the Kings of Tampa preparing to retire as well, but they want to have one more giant show with Mike at the lead.
8 CLOSER (2004)
Released in 2004 and directed by Mike Nichols (The Graduate), Natalie Portman turned heads in Closer, where she starred as Alice, a woman heartbroken by a callous British author played by Jude Law.
Based on the stage play of the same name by Patrick Marber, the film follows four strangers, who chance meetings ties all of them together, with Portman the center of the entire relationship. Her only attempt at honesty actually came while at work in a strip club. Both Portman and Clive Owen picked up Oscar nominations.
7 THE WRESTLER (2008)
The Wrestler is a story about an aging wrestler who can’t leave the lifestyle behind, living for the adrenaline rush from the crowd. One thing that director Darren Aronofsky does with his movie is to juxtapose the life of the wrestler with that of a stripper, also aging and struggling to keep up with the younger stars coming in.
Mickey Rourke turned in an Oscar-nominated performance as the aging professional wrestler. However, at the same time, Marisa Tomei also impressed critics by picking up an Oscar nom for her role as the aging stripper, as she won over a new generation of fans with her performance.
6 DANCING AT THE BLUE IGUANA (2000)
It seems that a lot of movies tend to show the life of a stripper as being an interesting one. Whether it is fun and games and partying like in Magic Mike or one of dirty and grimy lust like in The Wrestler, the jobs in the strip club are never that bad. That is not real life.
The movie Dancing at the Blue Iguana shines a brighter light on what it is really like to work at a strip club — specifically at the smaller ones off the beaten path. Released in 2000, this film starred Daryl Hannah and is about strippers whose lives are not what they ever dreamed.
5 FROM DUSK TILL DAWN (1996)
Of course, there are also times that all someone wants in their stripper movie is for an entire bar to turn into a haven for vampires. What is most interesting about the film From Dusk Till Dawn is that it is two movies of entirely different genres combined into one.
The first half of Quentin Tarantino with a crime epic with two murderous criminal brothers on the rin from the police and ended up in a strip club on the border. It is after Salma Hayek comes out as the top stripper of the show that Robert Rodriguez takes over, and the vampires start to kill everyone.
4 ZOMBIE STRIPPERS (2008)
In 2008, a zombie-comedy came out with the spot-on title of Zombie Strippers. It included a horror icon in Robert Englund (Freddie Krueger) and an adult film icon in Jenna Jameson, teaming up for a zombie fight in a strip club.
The film had a ridiculous premise where the world was at war with the United States, which was on the fourth presidential term of George W. Bush, who had disbanded Congress and made public nudity illegal. When a government experiment goes wrong, the strippers become zombies and are better entertainers than ever.
3 THE FULL MONTY (1997)
Before Magic Mike, the most popular and top critically acclaimed male stripper movie in history was The Full Monty. Unlike Magic Mike, which was all beefcake action, The Full Monty featured six unemployed British men who look nothing like a stripper should look, but still achieved their dreams in the business.
By the way, “full monty” means to strip all the way down, and that is what they hope will make them bigger than the Chippendales dancers ever were. It picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Picture and became musical in 2000 and a stageplay in 2013.
2 STRIPTEASE (1996)
In 1996, Demi Moore showed the world everything in the stripper movie Striptease. Where nowhere near as accomplished as Hustlers, the film shares something in common with that film. In Striptease, Moore’s stripper is a strong woman who fights for her family and the right to take off her clothes for money.
Moore is a woman with a daughter that she lost custody of to her criminal ex-husband. She then took on the job of a stripper to make money to fight for her daughter — but found discrimination in the courts due to her new occupation.
1 SHOWGIRLS (1995)
While some might consider Striptease a guilty pleasure, Showgirls is the true definition of a guilty pleasure. More accurately, when it comes to Showgirls, it is a movie so bad that it almost becomes good. At the time of its release, Showgirls earned a lot of publicity as an NC-17 movie released into theaters — or at least the ones that would show it.
Elizabeth Berkley, who shocked her fans from her Saved By the Bell days, starred as a smalltown girl turned stripper in Las Vegas. With a supporting cast that included Gina Gershon and Kyle MacLachlan, Showgirls received negative critical reviews across the board. It ended up as a massive success on the home video market.
