There are many video games featuring A-list actors out there and the Batman: Arkham series is no different. The games are built on stellar gameplay, an expansive new take on Batman’s mythos, and a plethora of gadgets for players to have fun with. However, the voices might be the most essential part of why the Arkham games are so beloved.

The heroes, villains, and even minor characters are so larger than life and require the perfect voice to bring them to life. From famous on-screen actors to iconic voice-actors, the Arkham games have many voices that might even surprise the more hardcore fans of the series.

10 Michael Madsen – Howard Branden

In the prequel Batman: Arkham Origins, Batman is in his early years and has a large bounty on his head. As a result, the corrupt SWAT force tries to join the many assassins in killing Batman. SWAT is led by Howard Branden, the most corrupt officer on the force and he is voiced by Michael Madsen.

Most might know Michael Madsen from his work with Quentin Tarantino in films, such as Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, and The Hateful Eight. This isn’t his only DC role as he was also the voice of Kilowog in Green Lantern: First Flight and recently starred in a fan film titled Batman: Dying Is Easy as Harvey Bullock.

9 Adrienne Barbeau – Dr. Whistler

There are many members of the Arkham staff to interact within Batman: Arkham Asylum. One staff that is easily missed is Dr. Gretchen Whistler, one of the eldest doctors working at the asylum, who has treated many of Batman’s villains. She is mainly heard through audio logs found across the island.

Whistler is voiced by horror legend Adrienne Barbeau, famous for films like Escape From New York, The Fog, and more. Barbeau is also a Batman: The Animated Series alumni considering her tenure as Catwoman. She was one of many famous actors to appear in Batman: The Animated Series.

8 Mark Rolston – Deathstroke

Famous for playing Drake in James Cameron’s Aliens, Bogs in The Shawshank Redemption, and Agent Russ in Rush Hour, Mark Rolston, too, has had a legacy with DC entertainment. In Batman: The Animated Series, he provided the voice of Firefly as well as Lex Luthor in Young Justice and Injustice: Gods Among Us.

He also entered the Arkhamverse as one of the eight assassins after Batman in Batman: Arkham Origins, known as Deathstroke. Rolston remains one of many iconic performances as Deathstroke, even returning for the role in Batman: Arkham Knight.

7 Peter MacNicol – The Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter does not have a large role in the three games in which he appears: Arkham City, Arkham Origins, and Arkham Knight. In all three, The Mad Hatter is simply a small side mission but that didn’t stop the developers from casting Peter MacNicol, who delivers a delightfully creepy performance as the villain.

MacNicol has a diverse career from comedy in Bean and Ghostbusters II to serious roles in CSI: Cyber, Grey’s Anatomy, and Numb3rs. He has had quite the tenure with both DC and Marvel playing in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Young Justice, The Batman, and more.

6 Stana Katic – Talia Al Ghul

Most might know Stana Katic as the star of Castle alongside Nathan Fillion. As detailed in a recent interview with Starburst, Katic has been a huge admirer and fan of DC artists, Butch Lukic and Wes Gleason, which is why it shouldn’t come as a surprise for fans to discover that she joined the cast of Batman: Arkham City in 2011 to play Talia Al Ghul. She hides her voice surprisingly well, making her nearly unrecognizable as Talia.

Stana Katic has since returned to the DC multiverse since Arkham City. Stana provided the voice of Wonder Woman in Justice Society: World War II. In the animated film Superman Unbound, she was the voice of Lois Lane.

5 Nolan North – The Penguin

Nolan North is one of the most famous voice actors in Hollywood. From movies to TV shows to video games, Nolan North has voiced many characters and even has his own successful channel on YouTube. The Penguin in the Arkham franchise remains one of Nolan North’s most famous performances.

Much like Stana Katic as Talia, Nolan’s voice is nearly unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepott’s. In fact, Nolan even stated on his YouTube channel that his attempt at a British accent in the Arkham games helped save his voice-acting career from typecasting.

4 Troy Baker – Two-Face/The Joker/Arkham Knight

In a similar vein as Nolan North, Troy Baker is also a prestigious voice actor who has starred in many award-winning video games from The Last Of Us to BioShock Infinite. Troy Baker has also voiced a plethora of Marvel and DC characters over the years.

In the Arkham games, he started as the voice of Two-Face in Arkham City, delivering the two personas effectively. When Mark Hamill did not return as the Joker in Arkham Origins, he not only did a nearly perfect imitation but managed to put his own youthful spin on the role, and finally, he portrayed the titular villain in Batman: Arkham Knight.

3 John Noble – Scarecrow

In Batman: Arkham Knight, Jonathan Crane (AKA Scarecrow) not only received a drastically different design but a new actor with John Noble. Noble for years starred in the show Fringe but he also played Denethor in The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King.

In Arkham Knight, he delivers a quiet yet ominous voice for Scarecrow that sounds reminiscent of horror legend actor Vincent Price. John Noble was given a chance to shine as Scarecrow was upgraded from a subplot in Arkham Asylum to the main antagonist of Arkham Knight.

2 Tara Strong – Harley Quinn

More than likely fans will know Tara Strong from something of their childhood. She has provided dozens of characters with voices for over twenty years, even the voice of Batgirl in The New Batman Adventures. In Arkham City, Tara Strong took over from Arleen Sorkin as the new voice of Harley Quinn.

Tara would then return for Arkham Origins and Arkham Knight. That’s not all because, since Arkham City, Tara Strong has played Harley Quinn countless times, becoming one of the definitive actors for the role. In 2022, Tara Strong will be reprising her role as the Arkhamverse Harley in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.

1 Mark Hamill – The Joker

Probably the most recognizable voice in the Arkhamverse, Mark Hamill may have launched to stardom with Star Wars as Luke Skywalker but some would argue his strongest performance is the Joker. Mark Hamill debuted alongside Kevin Conroy as Batman in Batman: The Animated Series.

Their voices and chemistry have become so iconic that too many fans, they are the definitive voices for the Dark Knight and the Clown Prince Of Crime. That continued into the Arkhamverse when Mark Hamill delivered his darkest yet deepest Joker performance across the series.
