No Disney hero or heroine is complete without a sidekick. Whether they take the form of a talking animal or another fairy tale creature, sidekicks are important. Although the protagonist of each classic Disney tale has to take action to drive their own story, many of them would be nothing without their helpful friends who often don’t get half the credit they deserve.

10 Cinderella: Jaq And Gus

Jaq and Gus (and the rest of Cinderella’s animal friends) are some of the most underappreciated Disney sidekicks in existence. Sure, it’s the Fairy Godmother’s magic that actually transforms Cinderella into her ball-ready self, but the magic uses Jaq, Gus, and the gang to actually get Cinderella to the ball.

There’s also the way that Cinderella’s animal friends help her get ready for the ball the first time before the Fairy Godmother even shows up, and the way they help her break out of the room after her Stepmother locks her inside.

9 Lady And The Tramp: Jock And Trusty

Two sidekicks that a lot of Disney fans forget about are Jock and Trusty from The Lady and the Tramp. These two take a while to warm up to Tramp, but they are kind friends for Lady and always look out for her, before and after he shows up.

When they discover that the Tramp really does have her best intentions at heart, they chase the wagon that takes him to the pound and stop it in time for Jim Dear and Darling to save his life. Trusty, in particular, nearly loses his life just to save Tramp.

8 The Little Mermaid: Sebastian And Flounder

Before Ariel gets her happy ending with Prince Eric, she spends a lot of time alone in the ocean dreaming of a happier life. Flounder is a great sidekick because his company likely keeps her sane during that time when none of her mermaid friends can relate to her desires to visit the surface.

Sebastian is also a useful sidekick because he tries to warn Ariel in advance to watch out for her father’s wrath, he gives her solid advice (that she ignores), and he even tries to help her land a kiss from the prince.

7 The Fox And The Hound: Big Mama

The Fox and the Hound wouldn’t be possible without Big Mama, the wise owl who barely gets the credit she deserves for her role in the story. Not only does she offer wisdom and guidance to Tod as he grows up, but she also is the one who united him with Widow Tweed in the first place.

This is the heartwarming story of a puppy and a baby fox who become friends against all the odds, but Tod wouldn’t have survived to become friends with Copper if Big Mama hadn’t stepped in and brought him to Widow Tweed.

6 Peter Pan: Tinker Bell

Tinker Bell might refuse to cooperate with Peter Pan a lot of the time and completely reject the idea of welcoming Wendy and the boys into the Neverland gang, but that doesn’t mean she’s a useless sidekick. Actually, it’s pixie dust that allows Wendy and the boys to fly in the first place. So, if it weren’t for Tinker Bell, the Darling children would never have left London.

Aside from that, Tinker Bell also saves Peter from the bomb that Captain Hook sends him, sacrificing herself in the process to rescue him.

5 Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs: The Seven Dwarfs

It may be the prince who rescues Snow White from the Evil Queen’s poison by kissing her, but Snow White still has a lot to thank the dwarfs for. You could argue that Snow White wouldn’t even survive long enough to eat the poison apple without them since they give her a place to stay.

The dwarfs aren’t quick enough to stop Snow White from eating the apple, but they are brave enough to pursue the Evil Queen and chase her to the cliffside, where she eventually falls to her death in the lightning storm.

4 The Lion King: Timon And Pumbaa

Timon and Pumbaa are two of the most lovable and iconic Disney sidekicks and any hero would be proud to have them as team players. Although this meerkat and warthog duo don’t have a lot of strength against lions and hyenas, they’re still immensely helpful to Simba while he’s getting his act together.

When he’s still a cub wandering in the desert, they rescue him and adopt him as one of them. They keep him company as he grows up away from his family and then help him to finally defeat Scar by distracting the hyenas.

3 Sleeping Beauty: Flora, Fauna, And Merryweather

Out of all the Disney fairies, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather from Sleeping Beauty are among the most helpful. These three good fairies look out for Princess Aurora from the moment she’s born, stopping at nothing to protect her from Maleficent.

It’s the fairies’ magic that helps Prince Philip escape from the dungeon and defeat the dragon, but they offer so much more help than that. These magical women actually sacrifice sixteen years of their own lives to raise a child that’s not theirs, just because they’re loyal to the King and Queen.

2 Aladdin: The Genie

There’s no denying that the Genie is one of the most helpful Disney sidekicks to have around and the one that most Disney fans would like to have behind them in real life. The Genie is bound by the limitations of the rules of the lamp, meaning he has to serve his master and can only provide three wishes, whether he wants to or not. But he’s still a super powerful sidekick.

With the Genie’s help, Aladdin manages to escape from the Cave of Wonders, become a prince and meet Jasmine, and escape from nearly drowning in the ocean.

1 Pinocchio: Jiminy Cricket

The first talking animal sidekick, Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio tops our list as being the most useful. This little insect helps Pinocchio survive the events of the story after teaching him to whistle, but his advice also helps to shape Pinocchio into a kind and decent soul and warns him of impending danger.

Pinocchio spends a good deal of time ignoring Jiminy’s guidance, but Jiminy never really gives up on him. His loyalty even takes him to the bottom of the ocean.
