8 Conan the Barbarian (1982)
Conan the Barbarian, its 1984 sequel Conan the Destroyer and (albeit to a lesser extent) its 2011 remake, should all be of interest to a God of War fan but John Milius’ original is by far the most enjoyable.
Contradictory to what Terminator fans will often tell you, the role was really Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first major breakthrough in movies and he brings Robert E. Howard’s game-changing fantasy world to life in a way that few actors ever could. Will fans ever see that third part to round out the trilogy? Let’s hope so.
7 Solomon Kane (2009)
Another adaptation of a far lesser-known Robert E. Howard character, Solomon Kane is a surprisingly ambitious, and even more surprisingly well-accomplished, fantasy adventure epic.
A great cast, smartly utilized effects, gorgeous sets, and frequently impressive cinematography elevate James Purefoy’s turn as the titular supernatural slayer into a must-see for fans of fantasy action movies.
6 Immortals (2011)
Director Tarsem Singh is well known for his beautiful-but-nightmarish movies and this amalgam of Greek myths is no different. As oversimplified as ‘Clash of the Titans on acid’ may sound, that really is the best way to describe it.
A pre-Superman Henry Cavill steps into the sandals of the hero Theseus and must stop Mickey Rourke’s barbaric King Hyperion from releasing the Titans imprisoned in the depths of Mount Tartarus in this brutal and beguiling epic.
5 Gladiator (2000)
Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning Roman-era epic rejuvenated a dead genre in a way that has yet to be rivaled. Russell Crowe’s vengeful warrior also became an instant screen icon and a permanent pillar of heroic characterization.
It may not contain any fantasy elements but Crowe’s commanding performance and Hans Zimmer’s rousing score make Gladiator worthy enough for even the most discerning God of War fan.
4 300 (2006)
In the pantheon of big, shouty, action heroes with a sword and an unquenchable bloodlust, Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas cannot be overlooked. Literally. He’s too loud.
Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Frank Miller’s comic series makes up for historical fallacy with unbridled stylistic insanity for a retelling of a legend that, itself, feels legendary.
3 Gods of Egypt (2016)
A decade after 300, Gerard Butler once again grabbed his sword and sandals for the considerably less loved, but equally ridiculous and entertaining, Gods of Egypt.
Historical accuracy is, once again, of no interest but was felt a little more strongly thanks to the tone-deafness of the casting. But the movie goes so far overboard in everything that it does that nobody could mistake its outrageous set pieces for anything close to reality.
2 Warcraft (2016)
Though saddled with the awkwardness that so often comes attached to video-game-to-movie adaptations, Duncan Jones’ Warcraft is a lovingly-made movie that injects far more detail and emotion into its story than it could have done under a lesser director.
Jones’ origin story for the war against Orcs and Humans in the fictional Azeroth is ultimately a tragedy but it always remembers to keep the swords and sorcery flying.
1 Beowulf (2007)
Robert Zemeckis’ pioneering motion-capture adaptation of the titular epic poem is, whilst certainly full of the flaws that accompany an integral technology still in its infancy, the most accomplished movie version of the classic story yet.
Ray Winstone gets his Kratos on in this bombastic but often-brilliant epic that not only keeps a number of the story’s weirdest elements intact but puts them front and center in one of the most memorably strange Hollywood blockbusters ever made.
