The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a beloved cult classic that has certainly made its mark in cinematic history. It celebrates its 45th anniversary this year, with its fans remaining as dedicated as ever.
Its songs and costumes are copied by fans all over the world, and audiences are captivated by the eccentric characters, such as Dr. Frank N. Furter, played by Tim Curry. However, even superfans may have missed some behind-the-scenes facts.
10 Tim Curry’s Film Debut
Tim Curry’s first role in a feature film was as none other than Dr. Frank N. Furter. Tim Curry did a splendid job playing the memorable character, but it couldn’t have been an easy task, especially when it was his first film.
Nonetheless, Curry has since gone on to play unforgettable roles in films such as Home Alone 2: Lost In New York and Clue, as well as lent his voice to films such as Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost and The Rugrats Movie. Clearly, The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a good place for Curry to start.
9 Making An Entrance
Fans undoubtedly remember when Dr. Everett V. Scott made his entrance by crashing through the wall. As it turns out, this was an accidental blessing. According to TV Tropes, the set builders forgot to build an extra door in the lab set.
Subsequently, Scott made a smashing entrance. Sometimes accidents turn into memorable moments and scenes, and it’s fun to find out about these little tidbits after viewing a film, especially a film like this one.
8 A Mansion’s Influence
Set designer Brian Thomson had heard about “an old house” that was near Bray Studios, and he decided to check it out. The mansion, named Oakley Court, turned out to be just what he was looking for for the film, as the house was rotting due to neglect from its owners.
The house essentially established the movie’s entire look, according to Thomson. It turned out to be a perfect choice, and today fans can even stay there, as it has been restored and turned into a hotel.
7 Things Happen For A Reason
Richard O’Brien originally wanted to co-star in the cult classic as Eddie, but Director Jim Sharman had another role in mind for him.
Thankfully, O’Brien agreed with Sharman’s role of choice for him as Riff Raff. Meat Loaf and Richard O’Brien both did marvelous jobs in their roles as Eddie and Riff Raff respectively, so Sharman’s intervention worked out well for both parties, and for the film as a whole.
6 Keeping The Mind Busy
It just goes to show that keeping one’s mind occupied spawns some pretty cool things throughout history. Richard O’Brien was working on The Rocky Horror Picture Show when he wasn’t working as an actor.
He combined his love for horror films and science fiction into the hit movie audiences know and love today. Eventually, he showed his material to future director Jim Sharman, and the rest is history!
5 A Compromise
Richard O’Brien wrote the film and played Riff Raff, and he made compromises every here and there. One such instance was when Patricia Quinn, who played Magenta, wanted to sing “Science Fiction/Double Feature.”
Quinn felt so strongly about the matter that she was ready to quit if she didn’t get what she wanted. So, O’Brien’s voice ended up dubbed over Quinn’s lips as a result.
4 Freaking Out For Real
Audiences undoubtedly remember the shocking scene in which Eddie was revealed to be the meal. Only Tim Curry was clued in by the film’s director, Jim Sharman, to this fact, and the remainder of the cast, like the audience, was genuinely shocked.
It’s understandable that Sharman wanted to get authentic reactions from the cast members, but imagine the actors’ horror in that particular moment while they were filming the scene! Their reactions are forever captured in the film.
3 An Awesome Fan
Fans are everywhere, all around the world. However, one notable fan was the late Diana, Princess of Wales. While conducting a theatre performance in Austria, Curry received the message informing him that Diana wished to meet him. Apparently, she told him that The Rocky Horror Picture Show “quite completed my education”, and apparently offered a “wicked smile.”
Curry was no doubt floored by the meeting; it must have been an honor to learn Diana had wanted to meet him, and that she was such a big fan. It just goes to show that celebrities never know how their work will impact others, even fellow celebrities.
2 A Different Criminologist
Vincent Price is a legendary actor, especially when it comes to horror films. He auditioned for the part of The Criminologist in the film, but obviously, the part went to Charles Gray instead. Gray did a good job, but imagine what the film would have been like with Price instead.
Price’s voice stands out above all the rest, and it probably would have changed the film’s tone a bit, considering the Criminologist was the narrator.
1 A Big Mistake
When Tim Curry was living in New York, he noticed people going to midnight showings of the film in costume. He decided to call up the theater and asked to attend, and while fans were thrilled, the staff wasn’t convinced that he was really Tim Curry.
He was instead referred to as an “impostor” and thrown out of the showing. After he proved he really was who he said he was, apologies were given, but he didn’t return to the theater. Imagine how badly those employees must have felt for making such a mistake!
