10 Quirky Anime Abilities That Are FlatOut Hilarious

Anime has developed a lot of weird and original abilities for its characters over the years. Whether it’s battle shonen characters showing some genuine (albeit impractical) personality on the battlefield or sports characters just using some straight-up weird moves to win at basketball, anime has embedded even comedic life into its already sprawling influence across various genres.

It’s not as if “funny powers” was an idea that Hollywood or Western comics never tried to utilize before, but anime’s special brand of expression and cultural creativity has manufactured some of the strangest, most complicated, and gut-wrenchingly hilarious abilities ever seen.

10 Vegetable Magic (Fairy Tail)

10 Quirky Anime Abilities That Are FlatOut Hilarious

Fairy Tail is a fantasy anime that is no stranger to mixing personality with its wizardry. Natsu Dragneel has the Dragon-slaying ability of super-motion sickness, Gray has shirtless ice magic, and Erza Scarlet is really good at changing her clothes really fast. And while plenty of characters have had strange powers before, it’s relatively easy to see how things such as super-crying or summoning a grandfather clock can have applications on the battlefield.

However, this series really stretched itself when it tried using Vegetable Magic (or, to be more specific, the ability to launch carrot missiles) as a viable piece of magic. However, it should be noted that the summoned vegetables also don’t taste very good.

9 Change Her Opponent Into A Lover Of Glasses (The Law Of Ueki)

10 Quirky Anime Abilities That Are FlatOut Hilarious

The Law of Ueki is host to a lot of strange and impractical abilities, such as being able to turn trash into trees or towels into iron. It’s even more interesting given that all of these strange powers are just expected to be practical in a grand tournament to determine that world’s god.

However, out of all the strange abilities within The Law of Ueki’s tournament, the most hilarious has to be Ai Mori’s power to “Change Her Opponent into a Lover of Glasses.” It’s exactly as advertised. By somehow getting her opponent to raise their leg and put both their fists to their chin, i.e. the cutesy anime pose, she is able to make them fall in love with glasses. In turn, she’s able to intimidate them by threatening to break her own.

8 Hypnosis Mic (Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle – Rhyme Anima)

10 Quirky Anime Abilities That Are FlatOut Hilarious

The Japanese media industry has arguably been fueled by three things: good-looking guys, J-Pop, and battle anime. Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle – Rhyme Anima dared to mix all three of those things in a mad science experiment gone horribly right.

The result is an anime series dedicated to a group of guys getting into rap battles with one another; and for some reason, they have superpowered mics that let them control people’s minds. However, instead of using this to influence people with traditional mind control, this typically manifests in giant, illusory explosions, music video graphics used as projectiles, and people getting legitimately hurt over a diss track.

7 Kanchome’s Transformation Spells (Zatch Bell!)

10 Quirky Anime Abilities That Are FlatOut Hilarious

Off-center transformations are not a new thing within the graphic novel industry, especially anime. Pokémon long ago dabbled in the humor of ineffective shapeshifting with their ditto episode. However, the “best” of them all easily has to go to Zatch Bell!’s dream team, Kanchome, and Parco Folgore.

In a grand, magic battle to determine the Mamodo King, Kanchome’s go-to ability is to transform into virtually anything. The downside is that he doesn’t get any of these thing’s abilities, such as being able to fire as a cannon, and everything he transforms into inexplicably still looks like him.

6 Dying Will Mode (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!)

10 Quirky Anime Abilities That Are FlatOut Hilarious

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! is a gag manga series that, in an effort to save its production, turned into a sincere shonen anime. However, before the story pivoted, it introduced one of the most hilarious powers ever to be seen on a shonen protagonist.

In an effort to teach the heir of his mafia family, Tsuna, strength and self-confidence, Reborn, a baby hitman, is able to shoot him with “Dying Will Bullets,” which kill Tsuna but instantly revive him as this over-energetic, confident, and shirtless hero. There are better ways to talk to girls and fight bullies, but the mafia world is a cruel one and it’s not gonna wait for people to pick up their clothes.

5 Noise Hairs (Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo)

10 Quirky Anime Abilities That Are FlatOut Hilarious

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo seems like a fever dream that everyone collectively had as kids when they grew up watching anime on Cartoon Network. In one of the most ridiculous anime plots ever seen, a group of misfits journeyed to save the sanctity of all hair.

Leading that charge is the titular Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo who fights a long series of bald-headed warriors with his own magical noise hairs. These nose hairs can whip people, ensnare them, or even summon a powerful noise-hair king. It’s one of the most outrageous anime abilities around, and it’s just the tip of the iceberg for this anime’s fun.

4 Giraffe/Pasta Machine (One Piece)

10 Quirky Anime Abilities That Are FlatOut Hilarious

One Piece is one of the most colorful and imaginative shonen series around. It’s already host to a variety of strange characters and powers, such as nipple lights or being able to process ramen in one’s stomach; so at a glance, just being able to transform into a giraffe doesn’t seem like the top of the hilarity charts. However, the fun isn’t in what the power is but how it is used.

During the Enies Lobby Arc, Roronoa Zoro had to fight superspy, Kaku, who used his ability to transform into a giraffe to contract his long neck and limbs, either to increase his defenses or shoot them out like spring-loaded projectiles. All in one, here’s a giraffe, killer Jack-in-the-Box, and secret agent crafting one of the most action-packed fights in the series.

3 Sexy Jutsu (Naruto)

10 Quirky Anime Abilities That Are FlatOut Hilarious

Naruto is all about ninjas using deception to get close to their opponents to land a killing blow, at least at first. Towards the end of the series, it becomes more about giant lasers and monster battles, but that’s a critique for another story. In terms of hilarious abilities, nothing gets funnier in this series than one of its biggest running gags, Naruto’s Sexy Jutsu.

This is essentially just Transformation Jutsu but intended to make one’s opponent flustered with fan service. It’s the creation of a juvenile stage of Naruto’s life that somehow found a role in the endgame.

2 Explosion Magic (KonoSuba)

10 Quirky Anime Abilities That Are FlatOut Hilarious

Explosion magic on the surface isn’t a funny power. Within the grand scheme of battle, it’s one of the most useful abilities to have around. However, KonoSuba isn’t exactly known for having “useful” characters despite its video game setting. Fighting alongside Kazuma’s team of an airheaded goddess and a knight who loves getting hurt, there’s Megumin, a mage who’s mastered only one spell, Explosion.

Explosion is great at defeating large groups of enemies and even single, great threats, however, its range typically bites back at her own team and even the surrounding community. On top of that, it also drains Megumin of so much power that’s she’s not able to move after using its one-use per mission, meaning that she needs everyone else to save her afterward.

1 Mecha Glasses (Gintama)

As one of the most famous comedy manga/anime around, it makes sense that Gintama is host to a litany of funny abilities. One of the most hysterical powers to come from the show comes after Gin accidentally breaks Sarutobi’s glasses. Sarutobi Ayame is known for two things: stalking Gin and having glasses.

After losing one of her key, character traits, she struggles to wear her old glasses again after Gin buys her a cheap, nonfunctional pair. This is even after Gin gets her original ones repaired by the series’ mad scientist, Gengai. However, Sarutobi soon changes her mind after her friends get into trouble, forcing her to show the true power of glasses which is apparently firing missiles and shooting lasers. As usual, Gengai did a little more than just repaired her glasses.
