10 Scenes Bollywood Ripped off Hollywood

Most people around the world know what Bollywood is. It is one part of the largest movie industry in the world. Precisely, Bollywood specifically is the Hindi Language cinema industry based out of Bombay. India is actually a large, diverse country with over 22 official languages with 1000s of dialects spoken in various regions. Some of these languages have their own movie industry. Some of these include Kollywood, Tollywood, Mollywood, and Pollywood to name a few. But worldwide, it is Bollywood that is part of the pop culture landscape in the United States.

While Bollywood has made fantastic films over the years, some films have used scenes that were taken straight from Hollywood films. Perhaps, that seems far-fetched, but it is true. Bollywood filmmakers have used the word “inspiration” but these seem like direct lifts whether in plot twists, action scenes or even the whole premise of the film itself.

Here are 10 Scenes Bollywood Ripped off Hollywood.

10 THE TRANSPORTER FIGHT SCENE IN DABAANG

The Transporter was the film that put Jason Statham on the map. The movie was known for its amazing action scenes and a great lead character. One of the best scenes in the film was when Jason Statham’s character was fighting a bunch of guys bathed in oil. Dabaang, released in 2010, took judiciously from that scene and practically shot it scene for scene. The movie was a massive hit and was one of the highest-grossing films of that year.

While reviews were favorable to the film, it committed the sin of taking a scene that was perfected by another and passed it off as their own.

9 BREAKING AWAY FINAL RACE SCENE IN JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR

10 Scenes Bollywood Ripped off Hollywood

Not many people remember the 1979 film Breaking Away but it was perhaps a poignant coming of age story in the guise of a sports film. It highlighted the class struggles between the elite and the working class, a love story as well as a sports film about competitive bike racing. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, released in 1992 and starring Aamir Khan, was also in the same vein albeit in a Bollywood melodrama.

While the final race is different, there are stark similarities in the shot selection with both the lead protagonist and antagonist facing off against each other in the final lap. Some would argue this is the norm in every sports film, but in this case, the coincidence is interesting, to say the least.

8 THE PRESTIGE “TWINS REVEAL” IN DHOOM 3

10 Scenes Bollywood Ripped off Hollywood

Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige was a great film in its own right. Despite it being one of his lowest-grossing films, it had suspense, mystery and great performance from Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman. For all intents and purposes, it was an original film, especially with its reveal that Bale’s character was actually twins sharing the same life.

Dhoom 3, on the other hand, is another story altogether. The film borrows from many pieces from Hollywood movies, but it rips off The Prestige’s plot twist in an agonizing way that it comes across as a gimmick than a plot device. Not a great moment for Indian cinema.

7 RESERVOIR DOGS’ WHOLE MOVIE IN KAANTE

To point to one scene that was taken directly from this film, it would be very difficult. But the premise of the film is a direct recreation of Quentin Tarintino’s original film. According to IMDB, the film is described as “Six bank robbers trying to pull off the perfect heist discover one of them is an undercover cop.” Now, that just sounds like a dumbed-down version of the original.

But Quentin Tarintino saw it a different way. In an interview, he is quoted as saying “I think it was fabulous.” But for others who are fans of the original, this seemed like pure blasphemy.

6 HITCH “TACKLING SCENE” IN PARTNER

10 Scenes Bollywood Ripped off Hollywood

If there was a real rip-off that was taken scene-for-scene from the original, it was the 2007 film, Partner. For most cinema fans, the similarities were plain as day, with the film bearing striking resemblance to the 2005 film, Hitch. The film had similar scenes and even when the two lead characters tackle each other on the office desk.

It seems that at the time, Sony believed this to be the case and actually slapped a 30 million copyright suit against the producers of the Indian film. But it seemed that it was settled as the Indian film got released on time.

5 ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST “DEAD BODIES” SCENE IN SHOLAY

10 Scenes Bollywood Ripped off Hollywood

This seems like picking at straws, but it’s still relevant. For the informed, Sholay is considered one of the greatest Indian films ever made. Critics hailed it as the “Curry Western” with its usage of Western tropes in an Indian setting. The film is still quoted and referenced in every facet of Indian pop culture. While the film is an homage to Westerns, they did “borrow” a couple of scenes from Once Upon a Time in the West. There is even a video on YouTube that actually highlights this.

Specifically, it’s when Claudia Cardinale’s character walks off the train to discover dead bodies in her midst. The scene is practically the same in Sholay when Sanjeev Kumar gets off the train to find the same. While Sholay is an Indian treasure, it did commit a few cinema sins.

4 ROAD TRIP’S “JUMPING THE BRIDGE” SCENE IN DHAMAAL

10 Scenes Bollywood Ripped off Hollywood

Road Trip was perhaps best remembered as the movie that featured that guy from American Pie, in the form of Sean William Scott. The movie was best described as a college sex comedy fused with a road trip. Depending on the day, it was a bit of miss-hit of a movie. Insterestingly, this film was directed by Todd Philips, whose Joker will be coming out very soon.

Of course, it seemed to make great fodder for a film called Dhamaal which was released in 2007. Just like other Bollywood film, the scene where the boys jump the collapsed bridge is directly lifted from its Hollywood cousin. The film was a hit and is now planning its third sequel. If anything, the Indian producers seemed to build on the original success.

3 RED’S “CAR EXIT SHOOTING” SCENE IN SINGHAM

10 Scenes Bollywood Ripped off Hollywood

One of the great things about the original Red film, released in 2010, was that it had a sense of humor fused with great action and older actors, with the exception of Bruce Willis, cast against type with the likes of Helen Mirren wielding a machine gun. It was only futile to think others would not copy the success of Red.

Singham, released in 2011, was not a scene-by-scene remake. It was a completely different film and was a huge box office hit in India when it came out. But there is one scene that the title character, portrayed by Ajay Devgan, steps out of his car while it’s spinning and fires a shot at the other car. It’s practically the same scene with Bruce Willis.

2 MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 “WATCH THE ROAD” SCENE IN DILWALE

10 Scenes Bollywood Ripped off Hollywood

Mission Impossible 2, or MI:2 as most remember it for, is considered the most infamous of the Tom Cruise-led franchise. Directed by John Woo, it favored style and mindless action over a coherent story and layered characters that would occur in later films. For young teenagers at the time, it was a lot of fun but, repeated viewings showed how badly the film had aged.

It makes it more baffling that Dilwale, released in 2015, would take the scene where Tom Cruise and Thandie Newton meet in a very odd car racing scene. The exact same scene is repeated in Dilwale with Shahrukh Khan and Kajol being their Indian replacements.

1 THE MATRIX’S LOBBY SHOOTOUT SCENE IN AWARA PAAGAL DEEWANA

If there is one film that managed to take a scene directly and do it exactly like the original, it was Awara Paagal Deewane released in 2002. The scene in question is the one where Neo invades the building and reveals that he has a ton of guns under his trenchcoat. It’s an iconic scene and will go down in cinema history.

Awara Paagal Deewana did it in such a hackneyed way where it didn’t make logical sense. The Matrix was set in a world where anything was possible. It’s Bollywood cousin was an action-comedy, that seemed to take its plot from The Whole Nine Yards. Bollywood has never been known for its logic. It’s more about whether the end product thrills the audience. Perhaps, in 2002, Indian audiences would have been thrilled, but today, they would be laughing as soon as they left the theatre.
