In 1991, the world was introduced to Nickelodeon’s Rugrats. The animated TV series followed the lives of four babies as their wild imaginations took them on endless adventures. Along the way, viewers came to love these babies’ points of view and their families.

The series ended after nine seasons but spiraled into a spinoff called All Grown Up, showing us the lives of our favorite babies as teens. With the show approaching its 29th anniversary since premiering, we’re taking a look at 10 things we didn’t know about the Nickelodeon classic.

10 There’s A Reason Tommy Is So Brave

In the episode “Mother’s Day,” there’s a flashback of Tommy in an incubator after just being born. This could mean that Tommy was born prematurely. And, when we’re looking at Chuckie, Phil, and Lil, Tommy is the smallest among all of them, adding some validity to this theory.

Tommy’s premature birth could be the reason why he’s so brave and continues to fight for what’s right when things go awry.

9 The Rugrats Movie Was Monumental For Nickelodeon

Rugrats was part of the Nicktoon era along with the likes of Doug and The Ren & Stimpy Show in the 90s. While Doug and Ren & Stimpy did incredibly well, Rugrats had them beat with nine seasons and three associating movies. In fact, Rugrats was the first Nicktoon show to have its own movie.

The Rugrats Movie came out in 1998, earning over $140 million in the box office, and was followed by a sequel two years later. Nickelodeon even did a crossover movie between Rugrats and another popular series, The Wild Thornberrys.

8 Tommy Didn’t Always Wear A Blue Shirt

Every character in Rugrats wears the same outfit throughout most of the series. Chuckie is known for his Saturn shirt, Phil and Lil always match, Angelica wears her purple dress with pigtails, and Tommy became an icon for his blue shirt and diaper combination. But there was once a time when Tommy wore something other than a blue shirt and a diaper. In the very first episode, he’s seen wearing a red shirt and overalls!

7 Dr. Lipschitz’s Subtle Shoutout To Germany

Dr. Lipschitz is seen throughout Rugrats as one of the best child psychologists in the area. Didi is often seen reading his books or talking about his practices whenever she has issues with her kids. Chuckie’s dad Chas also follows Dr. Lipschitz’s expertise to a T.

It’s not known where Dr. Lipschitz is from, but he does have a thick accent and can be heard humming the German National Anthem in “A Visit From Lipschitz.” Was this the show’s way of sharing Dr. Lipschitz’s nationality?

6 The Pickles’ Live In California

Among Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil, we see the inside of the Pickle residence more than any other home. With Tommy being the main character, we get to know him and his family more than the others.

Inside the Pickle residence, Tommy lives with his mom Didi, his dad Stu, his grandpa, and his dog Spike. They live in a sweet residential area, but in what city? While there are Christmas episodes showing snow outside, the Pickles actually live in Los Angeles! Their address is 1258 N. Highland, which is actually the address for Klasky-Csupo, the production company that produced the Rugrats.

5 What Exactly Does Susie Carmichael’s Mom Do Again?

Lucy Carmichael is the mother of Susie, Tommy’s neighbor. She always appears to be busy and juggling a million different things—especially with four children—and just in case any fan forgot, Lucy was a jack of all trades. She graduated from Le Cordon Bleu to focus on her culinary passion, but she also graduated from Harvard to become a physician! We also see her A+ singing talent in “Runaround Susie.” Is there anything this woman can’t do?

4 Rugrats Vs. Onesomething

Part of what makes Rugrats so amazing is the name itself. Rugrats perfectly describes the four babies and the crazy adventures they take themselves on. However, the co-creator Arelene Klasky notes that they almost didn’t call the show Rugrats. As she told The Guardian, “Originally, I wanted to call the show ‘Onesomething’ after the TV series Thirtysomething. But, in the end, we decided on ‘Rugrats.’”

3 Anjelica Was A Full-On Bully

It doesn’t take long for Rugrats fans to realize Angelica is a bully. As an only child, her parents spoil her rotten, and she often bullies the babies out of boredom. She luckily becomes friends with Susie, but that doesn’t stop her from pushing the babies around. It becomes her shtick, sadly.

But, do fans think Angelica goes too far? Co-creator Arlene Klasky thinks so. She told The New Yorker that she never liked Angelica because of her bully status. In fact, it was co-creator Paul Germain who designed Angelica after a bully in his own life.

2 Rugrats Was Beat By SpongeBob

The nineties and 2000 babies may have a hard time with this decision: which show was better, Rugrats or SpongeBob? SpongeBob released in 1999 after Rugrats had already been on the air for eight years. And, until SpongeBob caught on, Rugrats was the longest-running Nicktoon. But, now that SpongeBob is on its 12th season, Rugrats is now the second-longest-running Nicktoon.

1 The Rugrats Movie Involved More Celebrities Than We Realized

Nickelodeon was excited about The Rugrats Movie. It was the first film from the Nicktoon era and needed to be done correctly. The movie revolved around Didi and Stu having their second child, a boy named Dill. With a new baby in the picture, the Pickle household becomes tense, and chaos ensues. The babies escaped in a Reptar on wheels and end up getting lost in the forest with baby Dill.

With all the excitement around a Rugrats movie, fans didn’t even realize the number of celebrities that were attached to this animated film. David Spade was Ranger Frank, Busta Rhymes voiced the Reptar wagon, and Lenny Kravitz was part of the crew of babies singing in the nursery!
