5 Disney Villains Who Get Too Much Credit (& 5 Who Dont Get Enough)

When people think of Disney, likely, the first thing that springs to mind is the heroes. Concealed in the shadows behind every Disney hero, however, hides a villain. Often, the villains are as important to a movie’s success as the protagonists are: they get the best quotes, catchiest songs, and an absolutely delightful board game.

Though we adore characters like Aladdin, Hercules and Ariel, their stories would be a whole lot duller if they didn’t have somebody deliciously devious to butt heads with. Even so, some villains get far too much recognition and love compared to others, who are decidedly more compelling to watch. Here are 5 villains who get too much credit (and 5 who don’t get nearly enough).

10 Too Much Credit: Cruella De Vil

Cruella de Vil’s crimes are to try to kidnap puppies to fashion them into an aesthetically pleasing coat. Would there be as much of an uproar against her if the film were called 101 Lambs? Cruella doesn’t even do most of the crimes herself: Jasper and Horace do the dirty work for her, including slaughtering the puppies. She’s continually bested by canines and becomes entirely unhinged at the slightest pushback or difficulty.

Selfish, unstable and vain, she may be, but a credible villain? No. She’s a woman who wants a coat and is embarrassingly bad at achieving it.

9 Not Enough Credit: Governor Ratcliffe

Ratcliffe stands out because of how realistic he is. He spends the duration of Pocahontas exploiting Virginia at the expense of the natives. Greedy and self-obsessed, Ratcliffe has an unflinching sense of entitlement: everything he wants, he can take.

He genuinely views himself to be superior and more advanced than the “savage” Virginian natives, eager to strip the land of its valuable resources, regardless of the negative impact it has, which is all too similar to the real-life colonialists he is based on.

8 Too Much Credit: Gaston

Gaston possesses no redeeming qualities whatsoever and is entirely insufferable. His entire motivation lies behind viewing Belle as his property and destiny and seeking revenge against the Beast for making Belle fall in love with him. He’s not even an intelligent adversary for Belle, and instead merely relies upon brute force.

There is absolutely nothing to like or appreciate about him. He is a sexist, violent bully, and it simply makes it frustrating and irritating to watch him on screen, regardless of how true to life these characteristics may be in many straight white males.

7 Not Enough Credit: Lady Tremaine

Lady Tremaine is overshadowed in Cinderella by the Fairy Godmother and the glass slipper, but that doesn’t make her any less despicably vile. Tremaine dedicates her life to purposefully and systematically debasing Cinderella’s self-worth by subjugating her to the role of a servant within her own home. She is calculated and cruel, and she actively attempts to strip Cinderella of her every happiness over the course of many years.

This isn’t just a moment of madness, this is a sustained and prolonged psychological attack and, even worse, she never truly gets her comeuppance. Even though Cinderella finally escapes her clutches and gets her happy ending, it would be nice to see Tremaine get the punishment she truly deserves.

6 Too Much Credit: The Evil Queen

Part of the reason why The Evil Queen is given such a huge focus as a stereotypical or archetypal villain is simply because of the massive appreciation and love for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. However, the Evil Queen’s motivations are ridiculously flimsy.

She tries to kill Snow White, purely because Snow is prettier than her. The only remarkable thing about The Evil Queen is her magic and the fact that she turns into a very creepy-looking hag momentarily. Other than that, she is horrendously two-dimensional.

5 Not Enough Credit: Ratigan

Ratigan simply oozes charisma. Absolutely brilliantly written, Ratigan is the Moriarty to Basil of Baker Street’s Sherlock Holmes. While it doesn’t help that The Great Mouse Detective is, itself, a highly underrated Disney film, Ratigan is depicted as being fiercely intelligent and dreadfully powerful.

The equivalent of a form of mouse mobster, Ratigan’s sophisticated veneer conceals a volatile and crazed interior due to his repressed identity as a rat. His terrifying instability, coupled with his immense intellect, makes Ratigan a truly formidable Disney villain.

4 Too Much Credit: Scar

The villain of The Lion King, Scar is frequently lauded for being a hugely intelligent and Machiavellian character who succeeds in overthrowing the kingdom and taking it for himself. Be that as it may, Scar remains as too weak to do his own dirty work, and so relies upon the services of the hyenas. He fails on two occasions to kill his nephew, Simba, both times when he should easily have outmatched him.

Furthermore, he is a terrible king and leads the pride lands to complete ruin, which begs the question as to why he wanted it in the first place.

3 Not Enough Credit: Yzma

Hailing from the oft-derided The Emperor’s New Groove, Yzma is frequently left out of top Disney villain lists because, ultimately, she is not scary. However, Yzma is the perfect foil for Kuzco. She is single-handedly responsible for the most convoluted and amusing evil plan in the history of Disney and her interactions with her useless sidekick Kronk are absolutely genius.

As if that weren’t enough, she’s voiced by the iconic Eartha Kitt. Simply divine. The Emperor’s New Groove is the most hilarious Disney movie, and most of that humor comes from Yzma, making her one of the most memorable and oft-spoken Disney villains.

2 Too Much Credit: Maleficent

5 Disney Villains Who Get Too Much Credit (& 5 Who Dont Get Enough)

Maleficent is just evil for the sake of being evil. She dedicates herself to destroying Princess Aurora’s life, all because she wasn’t invited to a christening. Moreover, she sits around in her castle while her army of beasts searches for a baby for 16 whole years. That’s just poor management skills.

Maleficent is also let down by the complete lack of interest that the audience has in Aurora, who is potentially the blandest Disney princess in existence. The main saving graces of Sleeping Beauty are the fairies (“Pink!” “No, blue!”) and Maleficent is given far too much attention for being a cardboard cutout.

1 Not Enough Credit: Frollo

Judge Claude Frollo is perhaps the darkest and most complex of all Disney villains. A ruthless religious zealot, Frollo genuinely conceives of himself as a good person, using his religious belief to justify his horrendous acts. This makes him a multi-faceted and highly complicated villain in what is a hugely dramatic and dark film.

Despite this, however, Frollo is nowhere near as represented in merchandise or public consciousness as more two-dimensional villains have been. His dogmatic, unwavering belief in his principles and his unerring conception of himself as a good person fulfilling God’s wishes place Frollo as a much more realistic and harrowing villain, and as such he deserves a much higher placement in rankings of Disney villains.
