Although all of the characters on the CW’s long-running supernatural series The Vampire Diaries eventually graduate high school and go on to establish adult lives in the later seasons, it’s undeniable that their tenure at Mystic Falls High School is extremely important and life-changing for all of them.

There are aspects of their high school experience that every viewer can likely relate to, while there are other elements of their teenage lives that are so absurdly off-base from the standard that it nearly kills the suspension of disbelief for the series.

10 Right: Lots Of Dances

On The Vampire Diaries, it seems like the Mystic Falls gang and the students at Mystic Falls High School have some event or other going on in almost every single episode.

And while some of the events are a little over the top for a high school dance or parade, it’s pretty common for high schools to have a dance at least every other month, especially in suburban towns that might not have much else going on.

9 Wrong: Dances In The Gym

While having a variety of dances to keep students entertained is pretty common in most high schools, it’s fairly unusual for every single dance to be hosted in the school gym.

Sure, for something a little more low-key like a decade dance, it makes sense to keep things inexpensive. But when it comes to more major events like the prom, it’s fairly standard for the dances to be hosted at a more upscale event space like a hotel.

8 Right: Keeping Secrets From Adults

The drama that the students at Mystic Falls High School are subjected to is way out of the range of typical teenage drama, but one thing that does seem very true to life is the fact that the characters of The Vampire Diaries hide their extracurricular activities from nearly every adult around them.

Whether it’s the teachers at their school or their own parents, they’re definitely doing a bang-up job of hiding their real lives from the adults.

7 Wrong: Complete Lack Of Parental Supervision

While it does make a lot of sense that the younger characters in the series are doing whatever they can to keep their private lives private from their elders, what is weird is that they actually manage to do that for the most part.

These kids haven’t even graduated high school yet, but they’re out at all hours of the day covering up murders and killing supernatural creatures, so it’s very strange that none of the adults are even suspicious that something’s up.

6 Right: Competition With Each Other

The Vampire Diaries obviously took every aspect of the high school experience to its greatest extreme, but one way that it remained pretty realistic was the rivalries that existed between the students.

Whether it was Caroline feeling like she could never step out of Elena’s shadow, it was Tyler and Jeremy fighting over Vicki, or it was Matt and Tyler going toe-to-toe over a love interest, these characters were in almost constant competition with one another.

5 Wrong: Coming In And Out Of School

Perhaps in the days of yore when children weren’t monitored by helicopter parents and vigilant school administrators, it would have made sense for the students at MFHS to be able to come and go from school whenever they pleased.

But the students at the school seemingly come to school or leave whenever they want, and have been seen at the school on off days and after hours, when the reality is that no one can come in or out of a high school without someone noticing.

4 Right: Concern About Teen Drama

If the average adult found themselves in the kind of life-or-death situations that the students at Mystic Falls High seem to find themselves in on a weekly basis, the mundane concerns of day-to-day life would probably fade into the background.

However, it actually feels somewhat realistic that despite the fact that these high schoolers are dealing with things far beyond what any human would ever expect to cope with, they’re still wrapped up in a lot of petty teen drama.

3 Wrong: Closeness With Teachers

While Alaric Saltzman has pretty understandable reasons to have such close relationships with his students, it’s incredibly bizarre that no one in the school administration ever has a problem with it.

He socializes often with students after school hours, has blatantly obvious significant relationships with them that should seem weird to anyone who isn’t in the know about the supernatural hijinks going on in Mystic Falls, and at one point he apparently has children with one of his former students.

2 Right: Lots Of Dating

5 Things The Vampire Diaries Gets Right About High School (& 5 Things It Gets Wrong)

The Vampire Diaries is downright notorious for the characters seemingly constantly playing romantic musical chairs with different love interests.

And, while it’s completely normal to not date while in high school, it’s also totally normal for teenagers to start testing the waters of romance and dating around with different people. Teenage years are also years of drastic maturation and change, so it makes sense that some characters would outgrow each other as quickly as the TVD teens do.

1 Wrong: Intense Relationships

Dating around as a teenager is completely fine and normal, but what is distinctly abnormal about the romances in The Vampire Diaries is how intense they are.

Teenagers should not be putting their lives on the line for someone they fell in love with a month ago, and while people can meet the love of their lives when they’re 16 years old, it’s much more normal to cement a permanent romantic relationship with someone as an adult.
