By the time Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) releases, it’ll almost have been four years since the initial movie. 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse already cemented itself as the best Spider-Man movie for many fans, and Sony has finally released the first teaser/first-look clip for next year’s sequel.
The video teases into what’s in store for Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy’s iterations of their respective heroes is now all the more tantalizing after seeing its gorgeous, colorful art style and animation on display. Fans on Reddit have also been eagerly anticipating the teased, proper debut of Oscar Isaac’s portrayal of Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099.
Across The Spider-Verse Will Be A Two-Part Story
Into the Spider-Verse gave itself the reputation of being one of the best superhero movies in general, and not just for its titular hero. It left a high standard for the sequel to measure up to, and it’s already been revealed to make the bold choice to make its story stretch immediately into the third. Redditor saber_worshipper noted the decision to space out this story arc is welcome, saying the team probably “didn’t want to get too crowded.”
While the first movie was emphatically acclaimed, one of its critiques was that it tried to do too much at times by having so many characters in a single movie. With Across the Spider-Verse being a two-part endeavor, fans are more confident that the overarching story will be given plenty of time and space to breathe, which would greatly help with pacing.
Even Better Art Style & Animation
Also being one of the greatest animated movies ever made, the artistic standard has also been set incredibly high. The Fight Scenes
Another enticing tease the first-look video gave fans is an idea of what to expect from the action in Across the Spider-Verse. As Miles Morales falls through the multiverse in another feat of visual spectacle, Spider-Man 2099 warps into the former’s dimension as they clash across the cityscape.
It’s another element of the movie’s superb-looking animation quality, but the way their brief fight was choreographed for the teaser is reassuring for fans on what’s to come in the final product. Redditor hommemade claims that having “Joaquim Dos Santos as [a] director is a sure sign of the fight scenes going to the next level.” They also praise how he makes the “best dynamic movement in animation.” This will be another cog in the movie’s greater machine that should elevate the series to new heights.
Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099
In the post-credit scene for Into the Spider-Verse, fans were rewarded with a sneak peek at Oscar Isaac’s iteration of Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (and a meta scene playing on Spider-Man’s funniest meme). Isaac is an immensely talented actor, who’s been getting more and more prominent over the years, and already has another Marvel role set in live-action as Moon Knight.
Across the Spider-Verse’s teaser didn’t disappoint, as it showed a hulking Spider-Man 2099 with a potential conflict with Miles’ Spider-Man. Redditor GearZX shows excitement saying they’re “so glad Miguel looks like he gonna have a big role,” and Redditor I-need-a-cooler-name provides some interesting speculation, theorizing that “if he’s standing in for Peter B. as Miles’ new mentor, it’s going to be a very different dynamic.”
Each Multiverse Having A Unique Art Style
On top of the stunning visuals of Across the Spider-Verse overall, the title of the movie and the teaser suggests that a big part of the artistic flair will come from the given universe the cast are in. Redditor Rightcontentwrite says they “like the concept of him jumping through universes with radically different art styles.”
This, theoretically, gives the creative team endless possibilities in terms of what they artistically want to represent. The “multiverse” concept alone is an excellent plot device to use as an excuse to get bolder in animation.
Potential Tease For India’s Spider-Man
Into The Spider-Verse already established a great cast of characters, and the beginning of this first look at its sequel seems to be teasing more than just Spider-Man 2099. Early on it looks as if the Spider-Man of India is being teased since Miles seems to be initially swinging through the country.
Redditor ddeka777 points out that “‘Thwip’ was written in Hindi” while he was swinging through the universe. Given the aforementioned point that this story is at least two parts, Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) should be able to comfortably incorporate more “Spider” characters. Having what is essentially two runtimes worth of movie to get through, this story could allow more downtime in between the wonderfully vivid action to focus on character development.
Upgraded Spider-Gwen Suit
It’s been made clear in the teaser that a good amount of time has passed between Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse. Both Miles and Gwen Stacy look noticeably older, though, still school kids. Along with the age difference, the Spider-Gwen suit has seen some subtle, but welcome touches.
Redditor Justyouknowhy makes note that “more webs on her forearm,” “more black markings at her chest area,” and “they replaced her ballet shoes for regular shoes” to change up her suit in a tasteful way. Though the changes are mild, there is enough for fans to appreciate the attention to detail. Plus, the even stronger art and animation style complements them all the more.
