A Couple of Cuckoos Nagi and Erika Face Their Ultimate TONIKAWA Challenge

A Couple of Cuckoos is a brand-new rom-com anime series of the Spring 2022 anime season, and its two stars, Umino Nagi and the deredere girl Amano Erika, find themselves in a truly bizarre situation. They were swapped at birth and raised by each other’s parents, and now their parents got them engaged to help unite the families. But there’s work left to be done.

It’s not enough for Nagi and Erika to get along when they visit each other’s homes. Nagi’s biological father wants the would-be lovebirds to practice living together in privacy in a small house, and Nagi and Erika don’t have the option to say no. Practicing for married life will either bring out the best or the worst in these baby-swap lovebirds, and it may also remind fans of TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You. This tale of domestic bliss seems rather familiar.

The Stakes Of Erika & Nagi Living Together

Near the end of A Couple of Cuckoos Episode 2, Erika’s adoptive father set her and Nagi up with their own house, with the mission to create a warm and stable household to practice for married life later on. This new assignment took both Erika and Nagi by total surprise, and it went far beyond the scope of ordinary high school rom-com hijinks like Komi Can’t Communicate or Horimiya. Nagi and Erika are sure to reveal much more about themselves and build a meaningful relationship over time, but this domestic bliss scenario accelerates the process like never before. All will soon be laid bare.

People are free to be themselves in the privacy of their home, from their daily routines and sleep schedule to obscure hobbies and much more, and Erika and Nagi will get a front-row seat to see how the other lives their daily life. In so doing, Nagi and Erika might end up at each other’s throats if their personalities, lifestyles or even their worldviews clash too much — that could be anything from putting off chores to sleeping at odd times or just being a troublemaker in general.

This could potentially tank their relationship, but the opposite is also true, as TONIKAWA showed in a previous anime season. Erika and Nagi might actually make a fine team, even if Erika is a pampered semi-himedere and Nagi is much more interested in his classmate Segawa Hiro than Erika. If he can make one girl happy, he can make another happy too.

What TONIKAWA Says About Young Love

For those unfamiliar with the story, TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You is a slice-of-life story about the humble, hardworking young man Yuzaki Nasa and his inexplicable early marriage to the lovely but mysterious Tsukasa, who is happy to be his bride. The responsible, money-savvy Nasa is already living independently from his parents in a small apartment, and Tsukasa moved right in to build a new household with him. The two of them had fun figuring out each other’s lifestyles and going on daily adventures together, and they had almost no conflicts at all between them. It was a wholesome “us vs. the world” scenario.

If all goes well, the same may be true for Erika and Nagi, even if they come from different levels of income and have different expectations of what a comfortable lifestyle looks like. Erika is too used to the high-roller life for her own good, but she still has time to make adjustments and embrace the humbler lifestyle of her reformed delinquent, restaurant-owning parents. And despite having some himedere elements to her, Erika is a fairly compassionate and polite girl who is eager to make friends and support the people around her.

What’s more, while Erika isn’t smitten with Nagi the way Nasa and Tsukasa were fiercely in love, most factors are at least reasonably in her and Nagi’s favor to build a stable household together during this trial run. Mishaps and hijinks are practically guaranteed, but probably not the “I never want to see your face again!” type. This cuckoo nest swap scenario just might turn out for the best after all.
