A Marauders Fight Uses A Classic Claremont Story Technique

The following contains spoilers for Marauders #2, now on sale from Marvel Comics.

There are few Marvel writers who had such an impact on the characters and teams they wrote as Chris Claremont did with the X-Men. Claremont began writing Uncanny X-Men in 1975 and didn’t leave the series until 1991. He created many iconic X-Men characters and redefined existing ones, and left his mark on the way their stories were told. Even many decades after Claremont had left the series, subsequent X-Men writers looked to his work to help guide the stories they chose to tell with the characters.

One technique Claremont often used when writing X-Men stories was to show the team training in the Danger Room or fighting off enemies toward the beginning of the issue. This allowed him to showcase each X-Man’s specific powers and talents in action. This served as an introduction to the characters for any new readers who weren’t familiar with them before. That way, when the characters use their powers again later on in the issue, the new readers wouldn’t be surprised or confused by their abilities.

Marauders #2 (by Steve Orlando, Eleonora Carlini, Matt Milla, VC’s Ariana Maher, and Clayton Cowles) used this same technique that Claremont was well-known for. In this issue, Kate Pryde’s newly assembled Marauders team fought Eric the Red and his hard-light replicas of the Marauders. This fight showcased the Marauders’ powers and abilities in action. It was an engaging, exciting way for the comic to show readers just what these characters are capable of.

This technique is particularly useful in this instance because several of the new Marauders are new or obscure characters. Kate and Bishop are more popular, and readers are more likely to be familiar with their respective abilities of phasing and energy manipulation. However, team members such as Tempo and Aurora are a bit more obscure. This fight showed readers what these characters’ powers are, and how they are able to utilize them in the battle to defeat their foes. Tempo used her time-manipulation abilities to bend the energy blasts aimed at her, while Aurora used her light speed to strike enemies before they can land a hit on her teammates.

This issue also paid special attention to showcasing Somnus’s mutant ability. Out of all the Marauders, Somnus was the most recently created, having first appeared in Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1 in 2021. Therefore, it makes sense for this issue to display his mutant ability for readers who had not read Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1. During the fight, Eric the Red blew the Marauders out into space, and Somnus used his dream powers to psychically summon all of his teammates into his dreamscape. Somnus can stretch time in the dreamscape, so the Marauders have plenty of time to plan their next move against Eric the Red. In addition to introducing Somnus’s powers to the readers, this scene also introduced his powers to the other Marauders, most of whom are a lot less familiar with Somnus and have never experienced his powers before.

Though comics have changed a lot since Claremont was writing the X-Men, some of his techniques are still as useful now as they were in his day. Marauders #2’s use of this technique shows the lasting effect of Claremont’s work on the X-Men.
