Adam Levine’s shock demise in American Horror Story: Asylum is a nod to Psycho. American Horror Story is an anthology horror series created by Ryan Murphy, with the first season debuting in 2011. Each season focuses on a different theme with a new story and cast of characters. American Horror Story season 1 cast Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott as a married couple and was a twisted take on the classic haunted house story, while the most recent season 1984 was a tribute to slasher movies.

American Horror Story mixes a classy ensemble of actors like Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett and many more with delightful trashy stories filled with gore, sex and shocking twists. The show is set to run until at least season 12, and will receive a spinoff dubbed American Horror Stories; this will feature anthology episodes instead of focusing around one story for an entire season and is set to arrive in 2021.

American Horror Story season 2 tested how audiences would react to the anthology format, and centered around an insane asylum. The bulk of the story is set in 1964, with everything from demonic possession to Nazi experiments and aliens thrown into the stew. It also involves a serial killer called Bloody Face, and American Horror Story: Asylum cast Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine in a modern-day section as photographer Leo Morrison.

Adam Levine’s American Horror Story character and his new wife Teresa (Jenna Dewan) are taking a honeymoon tour of famous murder sites, with the abandoned Briarcliff Manor being on their list. Leo takes pictures and he and Teresa get intimate while inside the asylum – only for Leo to end up with a severed arm after sticking it through a slot. He doesn’t have much luck in later episodes either as he and Teresa are pursued by Bloody Face, which includes Leo being stabbed a few times. They seem to triumph and kill Bloody Face, only for two more copycats to appear and shot them both, killing Leo instantly.

American Horror Story: Asylum was one of Adam Levine’s first acting roles of note, and he was billed as being a major cast member. In an interview with EW after the first episode premiered, Ryan Murphy admitted about casting Levine that “He has this great movie star charisma. But what Janet Leigh was to Psycho, Adam is to this season of American Horror Story.” He does back up slightly and imply the character could live following his arm being amputated, but Leo was quickly dispatched in later episodes. Levine later appeared in movies like Begin Again, but he’s largely focused on his music career and acting as a judge on reality series The Voice in the years that followed.
