Adventure Time Obsidian Reveals Why Princess Bubblegums Rock TShirt Is So Important

Obsidian, HBO Max’s second episode of Adventure Time: Distant Lands, answers the former Adventure Time mystery of how Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch) first received her beloved rock t-shirt from Marceline the Vampire Queen (Olivia Olson), as well as why it’s so meaningful to her. Set years into the future after the Adventure Time season 10 finale entitled “Come Along With Me,” Obsidian follows the romance between Marceline and Princess Bubblegum as they return to the Glass Kingdom to help vanquish the dreaded dragon Larvo, an event that caused their breakup millions of years ago.

Princess Bubblegum’s rock t-shirt was first introduced within the Adventure Time season 3 episode “What Was Missing.” With the aim of making Finn (Jeremy Shada), Jake (John DiMaggio), Marceline, and Bubblegum acknowledge that the most precious possession is friendship, the Door Lord steals their treasured possessions, including Bubblegum’s rock t-shirt, and locks them behind a magical door that will only open when they sing something meaningful and true. Apart from Bubblegum’s confession that the t-shirt Marceline gave her means a lot to her, the song Marceline sings to open the door entitled “I’m Just Your Problem” subtly hints at Marceline and Bubblegum’s romantic history. Their relationship is also implied when Bubblegum gives Maja the Sky Witch her t-shirt in exchange for Hambo, who mentions that the t-shirt has “fresher” sentimental value than Marceline’s only childhood belonging. Within the Adventure Time special Obsidian, it’s confirmed that the rock t-shirt is a relic from Marceline and Bubblegum’s early days as a couple.

Within the last scene of Obsidian, a flashback shows that Marceline gave Bubblegum her rock t-shirt during one of her concerts. As Marceline sings onstage, she begins to sweat, takes off the rock t-shirt, and throws it to Princess Bubblegum in the crowd. As Marceline winks at her and Bubblegum begins to blush, the scene suggests that this may have been the way the two characters met or was a milestone early on in their relationship, which explains why the t-shirt has so much sentimental value to Bubblegum. In Obsidian, when Marceline and Bubblegum attempt to stop Larvo the first time around, Marceline details her frustrations in her relationship with Bubblegum in the song “Woke Up,” which not only drives away Larvo, but results in Marceline and Bubblegum’s breakup. As a music themed t-shirt, Obsidian adds another level of relevancy to Bubblegum’s rock shirt, since it appears that music initially brought them together and contributed to their breakup.

Since the image on the t-shirt features two candy people skewered on sticks encircled by a yellow snake, the t-shirt appears to symbolize the union between the two characters, with Bonnie’s soft bubblegum makeup exemplified through the candy people and Marceline’s hardcore rocker exterior present in the general tone of the t-shirt. When Marceline and Bubblegum first began dating, both characters had misconceptions about one another, with both characters viewing the other in very reductive ways; Marceline believed that Bubblegum was prissy and perfect, while Bubblegum viewed Marceline as rude and abrasive. As the characters matured, however, the flaws that formerly caused their breakup ended up being aspects they couldn’t accept about themselves, that Marceline had a softer side and Bubblegum wasn’t the perfect princess she wanted to be. Since the reductive qualities that both drove them apart and brought them back together are present within the imagery, the rock t-shirt then becomes a perfect representation of their journey as a couple.

The special Adventure Time episode Obsidian also adds more depth to the season 3 episode “What Was Missing” that initially teased Marceline and Bubblegum’s relationship. Just as Marceline used music to express her feelings about Bubblegum in Obsidian, she did the same within “What Was Missing” in order to gain entry into the Door Lord’s door. By revisiting similar concepts about “Bubbline” previously featured in Adventure Time, including Marceline and Bubblegum’s connection to music and the backstory of Bubblegum’s rock t-shirt, Obsidian acted as the perfect extension to Marceline and Bubblegum’s story, since it mimics the cyclical nature of Bubbline’s journey by ending in the same way that their relationship began in the mind of the audience.
