Known for some massively creative world-building and weird visuals bordering on almost too weird, Adventure Time boasts a successful 10 season run. As the series went on, music evolved from a fun gag to holding importance in storytelling and conveying emotion.
The show not only boasts more than 200 episodes, but more than 200 unique songs. Some are funny, some are sad, and some are just plain weird. But they’re all so Adventure Time. Here are the 10 best songs from Adventure Time, ranked.
10 Bacon Pancakes
“Bacon Pancakes” is a primary example of a fun, one-off joke song. Does it serve any purpose to the story? No. Does it develop Jake’s character in some way? Nope. Is it super catchy and fun? Of course it is!
Short, sweet, and simple, “Bacon Pancakes” fuses the two best breakfast foods together, creating a hilariously delightful medley. The fact that anyone can easily recall this song – as it is regarded as one of the most popular – earns it a spot on the ranking. But familiarity isn’t the only factor in the world of Adventure Time songs.
9 All Gummed Up Inside/All Warmed Up Inside
The introduction of Flame Princess requires a song fitting for an on-and-off love triangle. The episode “Incendium” starts with Finn singing about his unrequited love for, and subsequent rejection by, Princess Bubblegum. While the song itself is in a major key, Finn’s heartbreak and emotional strife makes it sad.
Jake then uses the song to help impress Flame Princess, turning it into a love song. Thanks to his quick thinking and Finn’s songwriting talent, the song works. And in case it needed to be said, don’t kiss anyone in front of their parents on the first meeting.
8 Fries Song
Marceline the Vampire Queen is also the queen of some catchy tunes. “Fries Song” is the first glimpse we really get into some of Marceline’s past, introducing the audience to her father, Hunson Abadeer. As far as parental issues go, “Fries Song” seems very lighthearted and something that should be funny in retrospect.
However, it’s just the tip of the iceberg for how strained their relationship is. In reality, the fries were the straw that broke the camel’s back, culminating in Marceline believing that Hunson Abadeer didn’t care about her.
7 Puncha Yo Buns
Baby Finn and a funny song make for the ultimate cuteness. As a very well-invested throwaway joke (given the amount of poses and references created for baby Finn), the song became immensely popular. Out of all the Adventure Time tunes, “Puncha Yo Buns” appears the most throughout the series.
Though nothing can beat the original version, Jake’s impersonation of the song in the episode “Jake Suit” comes pretty close. It feels slightly more cringey this time around, but Flame Princess manages to make everything better by rooting for Finn in his bet against Jake.
6 I’m Just Your Problem
Before fans were ever given complete confirmation of Marceline and Princess Bubblegum being a thing, “I’m Just Your Problem” gave the audience a lot to think about. As another glimpse into the past, it’s revealed that Princess Bubblegum and Marceline had a big falling out at some point.
Though the song is from Marceline’s point of view and needs to be taken with a grain of salt, there’s most likely some truth in that Bubblegum owes Marceline an apology for something. Bubblegum tends to have a holier than thou attitude, which Marceline calls out. But before she realizes what she’s saying, Marceline admits to wanting to make up. It’s only a snippet of their relationship, but it meant a lot to so many people.
5 My Best Friends In The World
Though Marceline steals the entire episode with “I’m Just Your Problem,” Finn doesn’t let her go unchallenged. Just as everyone gives up on retrieving their belongings, Finn makes one last effort to open the door. The result is a heartfelt song, a culmination of Finn’s insecurities in relation to the friends in his life.
His honesty brings the group together, helping them realize that being with the ones they love is worth more than the items they lost. But they do get their belongings back, healing the remaining tension in the group.
4 Everything Stays
True to its melody, “Everything Stays” is a lullaby that Marceline’s mother sang to her as a child. Out of all the characters, Marceline’s seen the most change throughout her life. Between her mother, Simon, and Hunson Abadeer, that’s enough change to last a lifetime.
But Marceline picks up her bass and sings the lullaby, embracing what stays behind. After all, friendship and love always stay.
3 Time Adventure
For any BMO fans, this was a long time coming. BMO finally takes center stage, comforting Jake when all hope seems lost. Even if things don’t go their way, BMO reminds Jake that memories are just as important as the present. Thankfully, BMO’s song allows Princess Bubblegum to rally the citizens of Ooo in one giant harmony, so all isn’t lost.
But the philosophy that goes along with BMO’s song is incredibly hopeful. Breaking down the lyrics, the general mindset is that people are so used to living in the moment – the present tense – that they forget about what happened in the past.
Because of how time works, whatever events happened between a group of friends remains frozen in the past. Thus, based on the past, they are always together back then. The song is only about two minutes long, by the way.
2 Come Along With Me
Known for years as the end credits song (that nobody got to hear because of commercials), the song was later given the extended treatment for the end of the series. It claims its rightful place as the most emotionally uplifting song of the show, playing over scenes of the citizens of Ooo after their epic battle for their home. The humans return, Simon returns, and generally, everyone seems content with how their lives turned out.
Though it’s the end to an amazing adventure, “Come Along With Me” shows the happy with the sad, making for an uplifting, bittersweet ending to the show.
1 I Remember You
The best stories come from tragedy and some massive plot twists. The episode of the same name starts out like a typical Adventure Time story: the Ice King recruits Marceline to help him write a song to woo the princesses. Instead, Marceline reads the notes Simon, now the Ice King, wrote to her all those years ago. What makes it so sad is Marceline’s realization and her desire to save Simon from himself.
Despite the simplistic nature of the Adventure Time characters, the image of Marceline crying as Ice King plays the drums, blissfully unaware in the background, is so incredibly heartbreaking.
