Agents of SHIELD Wait Why Was Daisy Johnson Designated an 084

Agents of SHIELD features multiple twists and turns that keep the series exciting for fans and unexpected for longtime comic book readers. One example is the revelation that Skye is actually Daisy Johnson/Quake. But even though this reveal doesn’t come for some time, it’s teased when Skye goes looking for information on her parents and learns she’s a 0-8-4, or object of unknown origin. Being that she’s the only human to get this designation, what factors contributed to this decision?

For starters, it’s important to rule out the fact that she’s an Inhuman. Since this designation came before she went through Terrigenesis to get her powers, it’s unlikely SHIELD knew of this. Also, it isn’t something that appears in a person’s DNA before they change. But with her abilities ruled out, it doesn’t leave many reasons as to why she is considered a 0-8-4. But as Daisy begins to search for more hints on her past, she eventually reunites with her parents, who give her more than enough context and offer more clues for her mysterious designation.

When Daisy is reunited with her parents in Agents of SHIELD Season 2, she learns quickly that they are not exactly people to admire. Not long after Daisy’s birth, her mother Jiaying’s Inhuman abilities brought her under the microscope of Hydra, and she was experimented on. When her husband Calvin found her dissected body, he put her back together so her healing powers could take effect. But unbeknownst to Calvin, their daughter was taken by SHIELD, and they murdered the village that hid her as they tried to protect the baby. Filled with rage, Calvin killed most of the SHIELD team, but the back-end team that witnessed the aftermath managed to find and save Daisy after Calvin lost track of her. Racked with guilt and rage, Calvin made a serum that could enhance his strength but turned him into a violent monster. But because this happened after Daisy was born, it’s likely her 0-8-4 designation didn’t originate with him.

Jiaying’s powers granted her immortality at the expense of a human sacrifice. As a result, she had been alive since before World War II. After being experimented on and seeing how cruel people can be, she led a sanctuary for Inhumans as her hatred for humanity grew. But even though her powers put her on Hydra’s radar, SHIELD was unaware of her presence and abilities. As a result, it’s unlikely her mother ties to Daisy’s 0-8-4 designation either.

If SHIELD knew nothing of Daisy’s parents, they likely only designated her as a 0-8-4 due to how an entire village was willing to die for her. Because of the massacre tied to her, the surviving agents also ensured the girl’s safety by creating a ghost protocol that put her into an orphanage. But as part of the protocol, she was moved every few months to keep Daisy hidden from whoever was after her. By erasing her identity, she was able to stay safe until Coulson and his team found her.

Daisy’s life has always been controlled by a higher power, but as soon as she had the chance to choose for herself, she knew the most important thing was to find out where she came from. Although it raised more questions than answers, she finally understood her past. Ultimately, her 0-8-4 designation wasn’t some major secret to be kept hidden; it was more like a precautionary measure for a person who was found during violent circumstances. Thankfully, she was able to make the most of a bad situation and become a hero throughout Agents of SHIELD.
