Alice In Wonderlands Twins Tweedledee & Tweedledum Explained

Tim Burton’s big screen take on the Lewis Carroll classic is full of fanciful characters, but who are Alice In Wonderland’s twins Tweedledee and Tweedledum? The terms Tweedledee and Tweedledum are thought to have originated in a satirical poem penned by English poet John Byrom in the early 18th century about the rivalry between classical composers George Frideric Handel and Giovanni Bononcini, that suggested the two musicians were very similar despite their quarrels. The characters appeared in several nursery rhymes too, but it was Lewis Carroll’s amazing fantasy novels that really popularized them.

Tweedledee and Tweedledum appeared in Lewis Carroll’s 1871 novel Through The Looking-Glass – the follow-up to Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland – and were drawn by illustrator John Tenniel as a pair of rotund identical twin brothers. Since Carroll and Tenniel gave them a face and proper story, Tweedledee and Tweedledum have become popular derogatory slang for two people who look and act alike.

In live-action adaptations of Alice in Wonderland, the twins are often played by two different actors. In 1999’s Alice In Wonderland TV movie, for example, Tweedledee and Tweedledum were played by Cheers star George Wendt and Robbie Coltrane. More recently, they were played by Matty Finochio and Ben Cotton in ABC’s Lewis Carroll-themed Once Upon A Time spinoff Once Upon A Time In Wonderland. In Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland, however, Tweedledee and Tweedledum are played by one person – British actor and comedian Matt Lucas – thanks to some digital wizardry.

Like many characters in Alice In Wonderland, Tweedledee and Tweedledum were brought to life via a mix of live-action and CGI. During production, Lucas donned a motion capture fat suit and his movements served as a reference for animators when it came to animating the twins’ bodies. Footage of Lucas’ facial expressions were digitally imposed onto the animated bodies, allowing for Tweedledee and Tweedledum to be literally identical. The whole process was helped along by Lucas’ double Ethan Cohn who stood in for the other brother while filming.

In an interview with Trailer Addict, Matt Lucas said he played the Alice In Wonderland twins as “naughty Victorian children” but some have noted his version of Tweedledee and Tweedledum are a tad unnerving. That could be because while Burton was envisioning what the duo would be like he drew inspiration from another set of creepy movie twins – the Grady sisters from Stanley Kubrick’s horror movie The Shining.
