All Of The MCU References To Namor & Atlantis

Here’s every reference to Namor the Sub-Mariner and his undersea kingdom of Atlantis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Namor is one of the oldest characters from Marvel Comics, dating back to 1939, but he has yet to make his live-action debut. The aquatic antihero has been at the center of numerous rumors as one of the next big names to join the franchise. The various mentions throughout the MCU have only fueled those rumors.

Namor was said to be the son of a sea captain and the princess of Atlantis. The mutant went on to become the ruler of the underwater kingdom. He possessed a number of superhuman abilities stemming from his genes as a mutant as well as a member of the Atlantean race. Namor was good-natured but was often plagued by his hot-headed behavior, causing him to be presented as an antihero. The character has been affiliated with the Avengers, Defenders, X-Men, and Fantastic Four throughout his history.

Due to the numerous mentions of Namor so far in the MCU, fans are hoping that he will make his debut in Phase 4. Many are suspecting that if Namor does join the MCU, he will first appear in Black Panther 2, set for a May 2022 release. The film rights for Namor are a bit complicated which could prevent Namor from getting a solo movie but that shouldn’t deter plans to use the character in other installments. To date, Namor or his homeworld has been referenced four separate times.

The Captain America sequel a few years after Iron Man 2 made a connection to Namor the Sub-Mariner, but the reference was more subtle. At the start of the movie, Steve Rogers was tasked with infiltrating a S.H.I.E.L.D ship that was overtaken by terrorists. The ship in focus was named the Lemurian Star. In Marvel Comics, Lemuria was a continent ruled by Deviants which sank under the ocean around the time as Atlantis during the Great Cataclysm. Namor had a lot of experience dealing with the rival continent.

The kingdom of Atlantis was mentioned in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 episode, “…Ye Who Enter Here.” The episode focused on Agent Coulson and his team racing to enter a hidden alien city before Hydra. At one point in the episode, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Antoine Triplett, asked in Atlantis was the location of the ancient extraterrestrial city in which the team was searching for. Atlantis was not the location of the hidden city but it was the first time the sunken kingdom was mentioned directly in the MCU.

Avengers: Endgame Hinted At Namor’s Existence

The most recent connection made to Namor and Atlantis came in Avengers: Endgame. The first act of the film featured a meeting led by Black Widow in which she touched base with Okoye, Nebula, Rocket, Captain Marvel, and War Machine. During their respective mission reports, Okoye mentioned that there had been underwater earthquakes off the coast of Africa. She included that Wakanda would be handling it by not leaving the situation alone. There has been speculation that this a direct reference to Namor and a tease about his impending introduction into the MCU. Avengers: Endgame writers, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, have since debunked the intentional connection but fans are suspecting otherwise.
