Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings Season 2 Moves Production From New Zealand to UK

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings season 2 will move production from New Zealand. Penned by J.R.R. Tolkien, Lord of the Rings is one of the best-selling fantasy novels of all time and spawned a slew of epic film adaptations helmed by Peter Jackson. In 2017, Amazon shook the fantasy world when it ordered a Lord of the Rings TV series with a multi-season commitment.

Set in a period long before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, Amazon’s series takes place in the Tolkien timeline known as The Second Age. Lasting 3,441 years, marking the One Ring’s conception, and ending with the defeat of Sauron’s army, The Second Age offers plenty of fresh faces and arcs for the saga. Recently, it was revealed that Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series has been slated for a September 2022 release date. Following the release date reveal, it was also unveiled that Lord of the Rings season 1 had wrapped filming in West Auckland, New Zealand. Now, it appears season 2 will go on a different journey.

Today, Amazon Studios announced that Lord of the Rings season 2 will film in the United Kingdom instead of New Zealand. Reportedly, season 2 is set to begin production in the UK in January of 2022. At this time, Amazon hasn’t disclosed the exact location in the UK that will be utilized for season 2 but revealed that the location change is due to the streaming service’s efforts to expand its footprint in the country. Thanking the country of New Zealand for their hospitality during season 1, Amazon Studios’ VP and Co-Head of TV, Vernon Sanders, issued the statement below:

We want to thank the people and the government of New Zealand for their hospitality and dedication and for providing The Lord of the Rings series with an incredible place to begin this epic journey. We are grateful to the New Zealand Film Commission, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Tourism New Zealand, Auckland Unlimited, and others for their tremendous collaboration that supported the New Zealand film sector and the local economy during the production of Season One.

Of course, Amazon’s decision to move Lord of the Rings from New Zealand comes as a surprise for the franchise, since the country has become associated with being known as Middle-earth for decades. Furthermore, Amazon was eligible for a government rebate for up to $116 million for filming in New Zealand, and it appears Amazon has opted to waive a hefty tax credit with the transition. As it stands, Amazon will continue post-production in New Zealand until June 2022. Indeed, it appears Amazon’s Lord of the Rings will offer new insight into Tolkien’s legendary work by laying tracks in different territory for season 2.

Hailed from the creative forces of Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, Lord of the Rings could be the most expensive, exhaustive, and extensive series of all time. For now, the news of production moving to the UK for season 2 is being met with uncertainty by Lord of the Rings fans, as New Zealand’s picturesque landscapes were the ideal location to showcase Tolkien’s tales. Of course, expectations continue to rise for Amazon’s fresh take on Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings saga.
