America’s Got Talent Simon Cowell Cutting Off Auditions Early Angers Fans

Every so often, America’s Got Talent creator and judge Simon Cowell ends an audition early, preventing the act from finishing out their performance, and fans have taken to Reddit to share their displeasure at his behavior. Season 16 of the long-running reality competition series premiered just over a month ago. Already, viewers have been treated to some spectacular acts. Jane “Nightbirde” Marczewski performed an original song on AGT called “It’s OK” and shared that she’s been battling cancer since 2017. Cowell hit his golden buzzer for the singer, sending her straight through to the live shows. Comedian Josh Blue, who won Last Comic Standing season 4 back in 2006, showed up to audition for AGT this year, receiving four yeses. And Ryan Stock and AmberLynn returned to help Cowell pull an elaborate prank on fellow judge Sofia Vergara.

Not every act can follow in the footsteps of someone like Nightbirde or Blue. Some acts are rejected by the judges when they vote. Sometimes, all four judges hit their buzzers, which automatically eliminates the contestants. Every so often, though, Cowell cuts off an audition already in progress. When this happens, he will usually ask a singer to switch to a different song because he believes the current one is not working for them. Something else happened entirely during the most recent episode of AGT. Identical twin brothers Jordan and Taylor auditioned under the stage name The Mooncity Masters. They started performing the Beatles’ “I’ve Got A Feeling.” Despite the song title, Cowell clearly wasn’t feeling this audition. He hit his buzzer, then quickly put an end to the performance. When the judges got a chance to vote, Heidi was the lone celebrity panelist to vote yes, so the brothers were eliminated.

Cowell cutting off The Mooncity Masters’ audition has angered America’s Got Talent fans, who have taken to Reddit to express their displeasure. They believe that Cowell is overstepping his bounds in being able to end an audition early, especially since it overrides one of the unique elements of America’s Got Talent, which is the judges’ ability to hit their buzzers. The fan who started the Reddit thread said, “I get that working with singers is his thing, but he doesn’t just do it on acts that don’t sound good. He does that on acts that sound good to others but not to HIM.” The fan doesn’t like that Cowell has “all this power.”

Several fans replied to the Reddit thread with their own comments. One said, “That was crazy! Left a really bad taste in my mouth.” Another added, “This is the point of the buzzers, Simon shouldn’t have total control of when to stop an act. All the judges buzzing stop the act.” One fan has a theory that he makes these executive decisions “to show the other judges who’s the boss of this show.”

Over the years on both America’s Got Talent and The X Factor, Cowell has proven time and again that these are his shows and he’ll do whatever he wants and change any rules to suit his desires. The networks that have aired his shows obviously give him quite a bit of leeway. Regarding Cowell cutting off The Mooncity Masters, it does seem like bypassing the buzzers devalues their purpose in a way since the rules state every single AGT judge needs to hit the buzzer to end a performance. But as mentioned, Cowell is the boss and he’s not afraid to flex that power.
