An X-Men Founder Is Joining Ms. Marvel’s Teen Heroes In Champions

Marvel’s Champions are outlawed, so they need to hide out from the authorities. The leader of the X-Men knows just who can help: pirate smugglers!

The Champions are Marvel’s biggest teen superhero team. Their roster features rising stars like Ms. Marvel and the newest Spider-Man, Miles Morales, along with a who’s who of crimefighters too young for the Young Avengers. In January’s Champions #4, they’re reconnecting with an old friend – a literal old friend, by their standards – as Cyclops of the X-Men takes a spot on their team. But the character’s history with the group goes back decades, defying time and space.

The Champions first appeared in 2016. The team itself was created by Mark Waid and Humberto Ramos, but brought together original characters with established teen heroes. Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales, and the new Nova, who had just quit the Avengers over moral conflict, teamed up with teenage Hulk Amadeus Cho, The Vision’s daughter Viv Vision, and Scott Summers, aka Cyclops. But this wasn’t the husband and father Scott Summers of the present day; it was a kid Cyclops, stolen in a time machine from the X-Men’s early days. Cyclops’ reason for being in the future wasn’t clear, but he led his own life in the present for several years before going back.

In 2020, the Champions are in tougher times. The Outlawed event has made underage superheroism illegal and the Champions are fractured. Some comply with the law, but the few Champions remaining (including rebel tech genius Ironheart) are fighting just to evade SHIELD-style truant officers called CRADLE. Even worse, not every hero in their ranks can be trusted, so they need to find one person they know is on their side. As Marvel’s January solicitations show, that means turning to Cyclops, who remembers Ms. Marvel and the team well. Cyclops has a lot on his shoulders, especially with the X-Men in crisis, but for old friends he’s willing to head where they just might get a break from the super-cops: international waters. Cyclops is enlisting the help of the Marauders, the X-Men’s own pirate smugglers who have plenty of experience going rogue to save lives. He’s never worked with the Marauders before now, but he’s close to most of the team, especially the pirate crew’s wealthy benefactor Emma Frost. Scott Summers pulling strings with the Marauder crew makes sense. He can’t take them to Krakoa, which has a “mutants only” policy, and his own home on the moon is crowded with his kids, not to mention his wife and his live-in companion Wolverine.

Logistics aside, Cyclops could sorely use a pirate adventure with his old friends, even if he’s aged a decade or two since he met them. Even when he was on the Champions, Scott Summers was always the kid who couldn’t wait to grow up. Now that he’s achieved that, maybe he can take some time out to try being a kid again.

Champions #4 goes on sale at local comics shops and online providers in January 2021.
