Andrew Garfield Was Right SpiderMan Shouldn’t Idolize Iron Man

An old interview with former Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield sheds some important words of wisdom on Peter Parker’s relationship with Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since 2016, Tom Holland has portrayed the latest big-screen version of Marvel’s beloved web-slinger as part of the ever-growing MCU. After debuting in Captain America: Civil War, Holland went on to star in his own franchise that has recently begun filming the third installment. As massively successful as the MCU’s Spider-Man has been, there is one major criticism that has dogged the recent depiction of the friendly neighborhood superhero ever since his debut.

One of the key relationships that Holland’s Spider-Man has had is with his personal hero and role model, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Peter becomes part of the Avengers through Tony, who grants him essential Spidey resources including a souped-up super-suit and more. Following Tony’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, some fans have felt that Peter is living in Iron Man’s shadow rather than getting to be his own hero as Spider-Man. The latest installment, Spider-Man: Far From Home, saw Peter relying on Tony’s resources once again for his new costume and struggling to live up to his image. Essentially, Peter gained a father figure in Tony – and that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Garfield, who played Spider-Man in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, shared some insightful thoughts in an old interview that recently resurfaced. During the press tour for his 2014 sequel, Garfield spoke about which Avenger Peter wouldn’t get along with – that one being Iron Man himself:

“He wouldn’t get along with Tony Stark… Too arrogant, ethics are dubious, and Peter’s a man of the people, Peter’s the working class hero, whereas Tony’s this rich gajillionaire that is arguably not all that responsible or heartfelt.”

Garfield’s statement about how Peter wouldn’t follow someone like Tony who is “arrogant [and has] ethics [that are] dubious” speaks a lot of volume to the Spider-Man character as a whole. Ever since his inception in comics, Peter has always been a superhero that represents the everyday, working class citizen. That is what made the Marvel icon such a relatable figure to readers all over the world.

The MCU hasn’t particularly focused on ordinary working class people – at least, not in the first three phases. Despite being the intellectual genius that he is, many Spider-Man stories have followed Peter still having to deal with the regular tasks and problems of any human being. With Aunt May getting older (in contrast to Marisa Tomei’s younger version in the MCU), Peter has responsibilities outside of the suit to worry about, as her health is a point of concern. Tony as a character, whether it be in the MCU or comics, has never been in the position that Peter is in before and after being bitten by a radioactive spider that changed his life forever. That is where Holland’s Spider-Man arguably strays from his roots.

Given that this is a Peter who is a teenager, those years in an adolescent’s life are some of the most important ones of all time. Peter is still finding his larger identity before going into adulthood and looking up to an idol like Tony Stark conflicts with Spider-Man’s entire character and where he comes from. It does certainly help that Tony is no longer part of the MCU, since Peter can ideally begin to grow into that more familiar version of Spider-Man. Garfield’s comment about Peter being a “man of the people” is hopefully something future Spider-Man MCU stories can reflect upon after tackling his identity now being out in the public. Should the Spider-Verse plot be something that actually works into Spider-Man 3, perhaps that is a lesson Holland’s Spider-Man can learn from Garfield’s version of the Marvel legend.
