An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player discovered they can bring back classic Animal Crossing character Blanca – from previous series games – thanks to an amiibo card. Since the game’s release, amiibo cards have allowed players to invite villagers to their town. However, this latest character discovery also shows that new amiibo cards have been made playable with the recent release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ 2.0 update.

Animal Crossing amiibo cards first debuted in 2015, and were initially used in the Wii U game Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival – which allowed gamers to invite their favorite villagers and play minigames with them. Nintendo has continued to release amiibo card sets since, and introduced amiibo features at launch for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In both games the cards can be used to invite villagers to a campsite in the player’s town, where they can invite them to move in. New uses for ACNH amiibo cards were added in the new 2.0 update, as well as the DLC Happy Home Paradise. They can be used to invite a villager or NPC to the game’s new café, The Roost, or to have a vacation home designed in the DLC.

Reddit user lbcordell575 shared their discovery this week of the return of a special character from previous games: Blanca the cat. Blanca was well-known to many longtime fans of the series because of her unique appearance – she has a blank face completely absent of any features. The user was able to use their amiibo card at The Roost to summon her to the café with an older card that previously didn’t work in-game. In the player’s picture she jokes that she has “an unbeatable game face,” a reference to her appearance in past games – Blanca would visit players’ towns with a blank face and request the player draw one on for her, allowing them to design it however they like.

Previously, Blanca was among several NPC characters from previous Animal Crossing titles that couldn’t be invited in-game using amiibo cards. Some new character additions were already known to be added in the 2.0 update, like brand new Animal Crossing villagers and NPCs on Harv’s Island. Now it seems that the amount of character additions is larger than once thought. According to Polygon, there are over 15 characters from previous games that are now available through amiibo cards – including classic characters like Gracie, Wendell, and Dr. Shrunk.

This recent discovery opens a lot of fun new opportunities for using amiibo in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Although Animal Crossing’s roster of amiibo cards already introduced several new characters, bringing back old games’ villagers and NPCs for cups of coffee and vacation homes is definitely an exciting development. A lot of players still missed characters from older games, and this new update is a pleasant and nostalgic addition for longtime fans of the game series.
