AntMan 3 Theory Scott Lang Teams Up With Young Hank Pym

Because of Kang the Conqueror, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) could team up with a young Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) in Ant-Man 3. It was recently reported that Marvel Comics villain Kang the Conqueror will have a “major role” in the sequel, and will be played by Lovecraft Country actor Jonathan Majors. In the comic books, Kang is a time-traveler from the future who has made numerous visits to the modern era in an attempt to conquer the Earth and defeat his most hated foes, the Avengers.

Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man 3 will be the third solo outing for Scott Lang. His last movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp, was one wherein he shared the spotlight with Evangeline Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne, who suited up using her mother’s superhero alter ego. By the end of the movie, Scott and Hope succeeded in beating the villains and saving the original Wasp, Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), from the Quantum Realm. As a result, the Pym family was finally reunited. What the third movie has in store for Scott and his friends is yet to be revealed, but since Kang is reportedly involved, time travel could be a factor. Time travel being involved makes sense, considering that the Quantum Realm can be used for that very purpose.

The Ant-Man movies have visited different time periods in the past, but not through time travel. Flashbacks to the 1980s have shown a de-aged version of Michael Douglas’ character interacting with members of SHIELD. Other scenes have revealed Hank and Janet in action as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Ant-Man 3 could take this to the next level by using time travel to make a young Hank Pym integral to the main story. Here’s how and why Scott could team up with a much younger Pym, and what would it mean for the movie.

Kang’s Role in Ant-Man 3 Could Be Connected To Ant-Man 3

Why would Kang the Conqueror travel to the present and fight Scott Lang? The answer to that question could be linked to Hank Pym and his Pym Particles. In Avengers: Endgame, Hank’s invention was one of the heroes’ objectives during their time travel mission. Kang could be after something similar in Ant-Man 3, except his goals could be bigger and more destructive. Kang has a reputation for relying on the most highly advanced technological advancements available. To get what he wants, Kang may need Hank Pym, who is after all one of the greatest scientists in both the comics and the movies. To build a particular weapon, Kang could determine that he’ll need a device of Hank’s, or that he’ll need Hank to help him directly. He could set his sights on Hank and come after him at any point in his timeline, whether it be in the past or the present. So far, every conflict that Scott Lang has been involved with in his solo movies has stemmed from something related to Hank, and Ant-Man 3 could continue to follow that trend.

Scott Lang Could Join Forces With Young Hank Pym

Both Michael Douglas and Peyton Reed have discussed doing more with Hank Pym’s past in the MCU. Douglas has expressed an interest in starring in a prequel that centers on Hank’s early days. Due to all the storytelling opportunities that a solo Hank Pym story would offer, this is something that Reed wants too. If Marvel doesn’t have any intention of giving Hank his own movie or Disney+ show, the next big thing would be a time travel plot in Ant-Man 3 that makes a young Hank central to the story. It could be that if Kang kidnaps the present-day Hank, Scott Lang will have to team up with his younger counterpart in the past. With Kang being around, this could be the perfect story development for the movie. If Ant-Man 3 is a time travel film, it needs to let Scott Lang interact with characters from different time periods. Seeing him working alongside a young Hank could lead to some interesting interactions, as it could show Scott a different side of Hank that he may not be familiar with.

An alternative scenario is that Kang’s time travel shenanigans sends a 1960s or 1970s Hank Pym to the present. Seeing the original Ant-Man in the 2020s, as opposed to Scott Lang going to the past, could be just as fun. It also wouldn’t be unprecedented, as stories with Kang have caused Marvel characters to be lost in time before. Hank himself was pulled from the timestream because of Kang the Conqueror in Avengers Forever. This is the sort of team-up that Ant-Man 3 needs, because like all Marvel movies, it needs to be unique to the previous installments. This would also help the movie utilize its time travel elements to their full potential.

Ant-Man 3 Can Make Hank Pym A Proper MCU Superhero

Such an adventure would allow audiences a deeper look at Hank Pym’s past, but it would also give something his fans have wanted from the beginning. Many were disappointed that the MCU skipped Hank Pym’s superhero career and went straight to him being a mentor in Ant-Man. Hank was a much more important character in Marvel Comics, yet Scott Lang was chosen to be the MCU’s Ant-Man. Marvel even took away his biggest story, which was the creation of Ultron. To make matters worse, Marvel gave another of his comic book alter egos – Yellowjacket – to the movie’s main villain. At some point, Marvel considered making Hank the next Yellowjacket in Ant-Man and the Wasp, but this never happened either.

Ant-Man 3 can remedy this situation and give Hank Pym fans what they’ve always wanted by pairing Scott with a younger version of his character. This way, he can take a much more active role in the action. In the first two movies, he was a retired hero whose exploits were only shown in brief flashbacks, but Ant-Man 3 can finally make him a proper MCU superhero. Hank Pym gave the Avengers some of their most compelling stories, but the movies haven’t really been a given chance to explore them. One example of this would be the time that Hank Pym, isolated from the Avengers and framed for something he didn’t do, single-handedly took on the Masters of Evil. Ant-Man 3 can provide a comic book accurate Hank Pym fighting alongside Scott Lang, in-costume against Kang the Conqueror.
