Apex Legends Mobile Beta Testing Begins Spring 2021

Respawn Entertainment has formally unveiled the existence of Apex Legends Mobile, which will bring the battle royale shooter to phones and tablets for the first time. It simultaneously announced plans for the first beta tests this spring, though players in North America and Europe – and/or on iOS devices – may have to wait some time to participate.

The current incarnation of Apex Legends is available for PC and all modern consoles. It was a surprise launch in February 2019, but has since become one of the most popular battle royale games despite competition like Fortnite and PUBG. It’s closely linked to Respawn’s now-dormant Titanfall series, but is more lighthearted and hero-focused, akin to Blizzard’s Overwatch. The live-service spinoff also features no Titan mechs – much to the dismay of players still waiting for Titanfall 3.

Respawn says Apex Legends Mobile beta testing will initially be limited to “just a few thousand” players in India and the Philippines. Over time it should roll out to other regions while simultaneously expanding in size. Players will also be limited to Android devices in the beginning, most likely because of Apple’s strict policies against seeding betas in the App Store (the iPhone maker channels those releases through its TestFlight app, which depends on a developer invite system). The developer promises a forthcoming webpage will let people pre-register when the beta is ready for a wider audience.

Apex Legends Mobile is being developed in collaboration with the core game’s team, and will similarly be free-to-play, supported by paid battle passes and cosmetics. It won’t, however, offer crossplay with PC or console players, owing to fundamental design differences such as optimizations and touchscreen-oriented controls. That’s similar to the arrangement for games like Call of Duty: Mobile or PUBG Mobile, since players of those titles would be at a disadvantage against console and PC users with better hardware and input devices. Crossplay does exist between the PC, Xbox, Switch, and PlayStation versions, however.

Respawn insists that “the best is yet to come” for PC and console players, and is teasing an update for those platforms it promises will be “one of the biggest” it has ever shipped. It recently updated to host a special War Games event with unique cosmetics and game modes, such as Second Chance and Killing Time, some of which could theoretically become permanent. That and other coming events will likely be long over before Western players get a chance to give Apex Legends Mobile a spin, but this latest news is a huge step forward for the new port.
