Apple AirPods & Pro Water Resistance Explained What You Can & Cannot Do

Apple AirPods Pro are quality Bluetooth headphones that offer both sound-canceling features and water resistance. Being water-resistant and waterproof are still two very different categories, so it’s essential to understand what levels of moisture they can take and how much will damage AirPods.

The first and second-generations AirPods are not water-resistant, and any situation of accidental moisture or heavy sweat could irrevocably damage the AirPods. For water and sweat resistance, AirPods Pro is the obvious choice. After their release in Oct. 2019, they’ve remained a solid option for those in the market for a pair of true wireless earbuds.

AirPods Pro are water and sweat-resistant, but they are not waterproof. This essentially means that they should be able to withstand normal moisture levels from working out. According to Apple, AirPods Pro have been tested in a lab setting for their water-resistance and should be safe in any workout situation that is unrelated to water sports or swimming. For water sports or any situation in which the AirPods Pro would be submerged underwater, they are unlikely to survive. Saunas, steam rooms, and showers will also likely damage AirPod Pro earbuds. Additionally, substances like soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, perfume, solvent, detergent, acidic food, insect repellent, sunscreen, oil, and hair dye can all harm AirPods. Their resistance to water and sweat will also degrade with time and use, and the water-resistant coating can also be punctured or broken.

What To Do When AirPods Get Wet

Despite the AirPods Pro’s water resistance, their case is not able to withstand any moisture or liquid. If AirPods Pro becomes damp, make sure to clean them and let them dry out before returning them to their case. If the case does get wet, it is best to dry it with a soft lint-free cloth and then allow the AirPods case to dry out before storing the AirPods in it again.

If AirPods are exposed to any of these conditions, there is still hope! It’s best to use a soft dry lint-free cloth to clean off unwanted materials from the AirPods although it is recommended to never use heat or compressed air to dry them. After they have been cleaned with the cloth, it might be wise to let them air dry before putting them back into their case. AirPods Pro offer an excellent way to exercise, thanks to their Bluetooth support and sweat-resistant technology. For those that take care of them, Apple’s AirPods Pro could stay water-resistant for years to come.
