Apostle Theory Thomas Is The Islands New God

Netflix’s spooky period piece Apostle ends on a slightly vague note by implying that Thomas (Dan Stevens) becomes the island’s new god. His fate is not explicitly stated, but instead is heavily implied. Here’s a breakdown of what happens to Thomas in Apostle’s finale.

The ambitious horror film sees Thomas traveling to an island to rescue his sister, who’s been kidnapped by the cult that resides there. He goes undercover as a new recruit in hopes to infiltrate the group and save his sister. The island cult worships a goddess that is comparable to a Mother Nature figure. The group believes that pleasing this goddess is what keeps their island fruitful, and Thomas learns that the cult is willing to do whatever it takes to make her happy.

Thomas realizes The Goddess is actually a living being when he comes across her being held hostage by the cult. He shows her mercy, and sets her free. The Goddess clearly takes a liking to Thomas for this reason. When he dies in Apostle’s ending, his body appears to be merging with the island itself, and his eyes slowly morph into the same color as The Goddess’s eyes. Apostle is sprinkled with moments foreshadowing Thomas’s ascent as the island’s next deity.

Why Thomas Is The Island’s New God

The island’s residents have become greedy and have begun to bleed The Goddess dry. They don’t revere her, they just simply take from her. Because of that, The Goddess is scared and weak. She can no longer provide for the island, which is what is driving the cult to drastic measures. This is where Thomas comes in to the story.

Early in the film, it is revealed that Thomas was previously a Christian missionary, but has since lost his faith. However, that caring and compassionate mentality never left him, so when he comes upon The Goddess, he doesn’t take advantage of her powers like the cult members. Instead, he helps her. It’s the only kindness that The Goddess has seen in a long time, which could be why she’s chosen him to take her place. As The Goddess so desperately wants to move on, Thomas seems to be the natural choice for the next island deity. As he sets her free, The Goddess imparts all her wisdom and history of knowledge to Thomas. This act is clearly intended to prepare him for his role as island deity.

He frees The Goddess by setting her on fire, and that fire spreads to the rest of the village. The cult members evacuate the island, which spurs plenty of chaos. Thomas gets in a fight while ensuring his sister makes it off the island safely, and sustains a number of stab wounds. He chooses not to leave the island, because he knows he won’t survive. Cult leader Malcolm (Michael Sheen) stays as well, making the choice to metaphorically go down with the ship. The two men share a knowing look, almost as if Malcolm recognizes what’s next for Thomas. As his blood drips onto the earth, plants rise and begin to pierce and wrap around Thomas’ body, literally tethering him to the island. Just as Apostle’s credits begin to roll, The Goddess whispers something to Thomas in her native tongue, presumably urging him to take his place as the island’s next god so he can live on – if this theory holds true, perhaps this was her way of repaying him for his kindness by giving him a second chance at life.
