Apple iPad Pro 2020 Vs 2018 Whats New & Is It Worth The Upgrade

Today, Apple unveiled the latest edition of its iPad Pro. The new 2020 model will launch with an A12Z Bionic chip built to support its upgrades and Apple is pushing the device’s usage in professional spaces, emphasizing its processing chip, “Ultra-Wide” camera, studio-quality microphones, motion sensors, and LiDAR scanner to support high-grade editing software.

The 2018 release of the iPad Pro ran on an eight-core A12X Bionic chip and offered up to 1 TB of storage. With it, Apple pushed a “Neural Engine,” a piece of the processor that boosted the device’s computing capacity. Apple is pushing the 2020 model in a similar way, but while in 2018 the keynote feature was Face ID, in 2020 Apple is pushing its augmented reality boosting LiDAR scanner.

In addition, the LiDAR scanner aims to capitalize on the iPad Pro 2020’s advanced processing capabilities. The A12Z Bionic chip grants the iPad Pro a stronger understanding of its surroundings, giving the users an improved augmented reality experience, and developers better tools. Apple used its measuring app as an example of how the LiDAR scanner will help the device quickly produce more accurate measurements. In the same announcement, Apple unveiled its Magic Keyboard, a backlit keyboard with the trackpad support that has been missing from iPadOS. On the software front, iPadOS 13.4 aims to improve workflow by granting users a speedy and clear method of navigating their workspaces. The cursor will appear as a circle and highlight things the user can interact with, and the touchpad itself is capable of navigating through menus with simple gestures. Apple will also be pushing updates to its iWork applications to ensure users will be able to take full advantage of this upgrade. iPadOS 13.4 will be a free update for all iPad owners and will available on March 24.

Should You Upgrade To The iPad Pro 2020?

The 2020 edition of the iPad Pro improves upon its predecessors significantly, but the price for owning one starts at over $1000. Nowadays, you can buy the 2018 model for around $800 and keeping your old iPad Pro won’t be losing you much functionality. The iPadPro 2018 features an A12X Bionic chip and a 12 megapixel camera. At the moment, the largest advantages to the new 2020 model are the built-in features the 2018 model lacked, including motion sensors and studio-quality microphones, The latter can be circumvented by purchasing a separate microphone – one that won’t be tethered to the device. Of course, you do also get that additional ultra-wide camera as well.

The iPad Pro 2020 looks to be a good purchase if it’s your first iPad, although it’s not a necessary purchase unless you plan to get the most out of its additional features. The depth-sensing technology enabled by the LiDAR scanner will turn the iPad Pro into a device with a deep understanding of three-dimensional space, leading to a more sophisticated augmented reality experience. If you’re not interested in that, all the new software updates will be available to previous models and you can buy Apple’s Magic Keyboard separately for around $400 – if you’re looking for a quality trackpad.
