Apple Unveils iPhone 12 The First iPhone With 5G

The new iPhone 12 was announced at the recent Apple ‘Hi, Speed’ Event. As hinted at by the name, the newest models feature fast 5G cellular capabilities, supporting super high-speed mmWave and the more widespread Sub-6 varieties. While the iPhone is not available for purchase immediately, Apple had pre-release models on hand for demonstration. Several new features were added and a new design was showcased.

Apple has annual events near the end of each year to present its newest products featuring the latest hardware and software advancements. The primary product since its first appearance in 2007 is the iPhone. Apple sometimes releases products at its Worldwide Developers Conference which occurs mid-year. Also, a few releases happen without any special event and are announced via press release. Apple plays its cards close to the vest, but now that Apple has made the iPhone announcement official, it’s time to review all that was revealed.

Apple’s new iPhone 12 was officially announced at the October 13 ‘Hi, Speed’ Event. 5G is the biggest addition to the new models and both the fastest versions, mmWave, and the most widespread, Sub-6, will be supported. Plenty has changed with the iPhone this year. There were a total of four new iPhone models shown. The smallest was the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini. There were two in the 6.1-inch size, one being a larger version of the iPhone 12 and the other the iPhone 12 Pro. While the size is the same, the Pro model has more features and a higher price. Finally, the largest iPhone ever made rounds out the four new models, with the iPhone 12 Pro Max boasting a 6.7-inch display. All four models feature a new flat edge design that was predicted by rumors and share similar internals, though the Pro models come with additional hardware that explains the Pro branding.

What’s New With iPhone 12?

With the addition of two new sizes and flat edges that are reminiscent of the iPad Pro, the iPhone 12 is a significant update to Apple’s iconic smartphone. Common features include an Super XDR Retina OLED, higher resolution and Dolby Vision. The bezels are thinner, making the devices slimmer, smaller and lighter. All include Ceramic Shield glass that’s stronger and more scratch-resistant, with four times the drop protection. Of course, the A14 processor is powering all iPhone 12 models and Apple notes how it uses the 5nm manufacturing process before any other mobile phone manufacturer.

The main camera got a nice update, a larger f/1.6 aperture and 7 piece lens, allowing 27-percent better low-light performance. The iPhone Pro models include a LiDAR scanner, which is also known as a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor. This is the 3D scanning technology that was introduced with the 2020 iPad Pro. It is critical for AR developers and enhances any AR experience. Making this tech fit in the much more portable iPhone will advance the state of Apple AR dramatically, over what was seen with the iPad Pro.

Besides new iPhone models, the Apple Event also introduced a new HomePod mini, taking on a smaller, more spherical shape than the full size model and coming in with a much lower price. A MagSafe charger was also announced. This was among Apple’s most anticipated events ever, and with four new iPhone 12 models set to challenge competitors, smartphone buyers can now start checking to see which phone best suit their needs.
