Army Of The Deads Viewing Figures Confirm Its The Best Snyderverse Future

Zack Snyder scored a hit with Army Of The Dead, with its viewing figures showing it to be one of Netflix’s most popular movies of all time, and confirming that the director has found the best home for a future Snyderverse away from the DCEU. Centering on a Las Vegas casino heist amidst a zombie outbreak, Army of the Dead is quintessentially a Zack Snyder movie, with all his hallmarks and stylistic flourishes on display. With Netflix giving him $70-$90 million to bring his vision to life, he was able to expand the scale and scope of the story beyond the confines of the standard zombie-apocalypse sub-genre, which is predominantly relegated to low-budget fare.

Netflix’s confidence in Snyder for Army of the Dead has been validated by the viewing figures (via Deadline), which show 75 million homes watched the movie (or at least the first two minutes, which counts as one view). The film also made the streaming giant’s top 10 films for total viewing hours (186 million), showing Snyder was right to create an intricate shared universe for Army of the Dead before it was even released. Prequel Army of Thieves has safecracker Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer, also on directing duties) back in a new adventure set during the early phases of the zombie outbreak, but interestingly leaves the zombies in the background and switches genres to a romantic comedy heist movie. Meanwhile Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas jumps back into the undead carnage, being an anime show that will expand the story seen during the opening titles of the first film, with Dave Bautista and his crew attempting to hold back the zombie hordes.

In addition to those spinoffs, the film’s epilogue also sets up a direct sequel. Snyder’s zombie universe is not limited to the horror, action, or comedy genres though, with hints at sci-fi elements (aliens/robots/time loops) as well that can keep the franchise fresh where standard zombie films risk slipping into cliché and repetition. Snyder’s staying with Netflix for his next movie, the sci-fi space adventure Rebel Moon, set on the far reaches of the galaxy, and tellingly also involving an army. With the first zombie Zeus coming from Area 51, the possibilities for expanding Netflix’s Snyderverse (or “Armyverse”) into the stars seems too good an opportunity to pass up.

While Snyder seems to have found a new home at Netflix, fans of the director also continue to wave the flag for the restoration of the DCEU Snyderverse his Justice League was setting up. However, while he’s been vindicated by the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Warner Bros. has closed the door on his vision for the DCEU, instead prioritizing individual movies over the pursuit of a shared universe. His plans for the DCEU could potentially continue in the form of a comic book or in animated installments, though even if this does come to fruition it’s unlikely to be as cathartic for his fans as new live-action movies would be. Conversely, Netflix’s reputation for giving creatives artistic freedom makes it the perfect environment for Snyder, who is at his best when not weighed down by the kind of studio notes and interference that stalled his grand plans for the DCEU.

Zack Snyder has the best chance of achieving his Army of the Dead franchise ambitions with Netflix, and the public response proves there is an appetite for it. His penchant for long films isn’t an issue for the streaming service as it was at Warner Bros. The only downside is that his films are designed to be seen on the big screen, but even then Netflix has shown that they’re willing to give their prestige pictures a theatrical release, as indeed was the case for Army of the Dead.
