The Walt Disney Company is known for its award-winning animated movies, but the studio has also produced some classic live-action films in the past. The upcoming Artemis Fowl has already split public opinion but could surpass many expectations.

There’s been plenty of other live-action Disney films that have gone above and beyond what fans expected from them. With so many new reboots like Atlantis or Hercules and the creation of original content for Disney+ it’s interesting to look back on movies that fans were perhaps skeptical about before their release.

10 Pirates Of The Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003)

Disney is constantly looking at its intellectual properties to see if there’s anything that could potentially become a blockbuster franchise. Many were skeptical that a Disney ride would be the key to success.

With stars like Johnny Depp onboard, however, there was certainly hope for the series. No one could have expected that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise would become as big as it did though, with the first film really becoming a fan favorite.

9 Aladdin (2019)

Disney has started remaking many of their animated films, turning them into live-action hits, or sometimes misses. One of the most popular animated films of all time is Aladdin.

From Robin Williams’ fantastic performance to the magical music and beautiful animation, there was a lot to live up to here. Despite a lot of cynicism, the live-action version delivered, creating another memorable movie for the archives which audiences had a lot of fun with.

8 Into The Woods (2014)

Not everyone was familiar with the source material for Into The Woods although it was clear that the musical movie would be playing off of some classic fairy tale characters.

The film was packed full of stars but this isn’t always the recipe for success. Luckily Disney managed to play within the material well and create an underrated addition to their history with a series of great performances and catchy songs.

7 Lady And The Tramp (2019)

With yet another live-action remake, the company hoped that the creation of Lady and the Tramp as a Disney+ exclusive could help them launch the streaming service with some new content.

With the movie skipping cinemas it was easy to argue there weren’t a lot of expectations for the canine adventure. Yet, the movie came off as charming, with great visuals and two animal leads who melted many hearts.

6 Christopher Robin (2018)

Winnie the Pooh is one of the most famous literary characters in the world. His animated series, produced by Disney, has seen the character play a large part in the young lives of many children.

There was a lot of debate over bringing Pooh into the live-action world for the first time. With a new story featuring a much older Christopher Robin though, this charming tale showed audiences that the magic was still alive.

5 The Princess Diaries (2001)

It was easy to pass of The Princess Diaries as another chick-flick, although one that Disney is not often known to try their hand at. Yet, something about this movie managed to achieve more than a traditional teen drama.

The film stood out compared to many others, with its witty dialogue and relatable lead. The Princess Diaries helped to catapult Anne Hathaway’s career and audiences enjoyed seeing Julie Andrews in a completely new role. A third film is always on the cards!

4 The Jungle Book (2016)

Of all the animated movies to remake, The Jungle Book seemed like the most logical but also the least interesting. With other movies based on the property in the works, the fascination with this project dwindled.

Not only did this movie manage to build upon the original movie, but it also helps to develop the technology for future projects and demonstrated Jon Favreau’s ability to work in a CGI world; all while bringing some great voice acting performances from Hollywood legends.

3 The Santa Clause (1994)

The Santa Clause is now part of many holiday traditions. Having spun-off a whole franchise, it’s easy to say now that the original Tim Allen film was a great success.

But before it’s release it would have been easy to suggest that this would be another heartless Christmas film, aimed perhaps only at small children. This managed to delight whole families, creating fun and unique piece of Santa Claus lore.

2 Cinderella (2015)

One of Disney’s most classic fairy tales has to be the story of Cinderella. A young woman who loses her parents, she is forced to live under the rule of her evil step-mother.

It’s defined the Walt Disney brand and remaking it during the early days of these reboots was met with a lot of skepticism. The result was a movie that managed to hold on to the magic while updating the story for modern audiences.

1 National Treasure (2004)

Nicolas Cage is the kind of actor that audiences pay attention to. It was probably natural to write off a venture with Disney though, as many of Cage’s best performances come from being completely unfiltered.

Despite early critic reviews, National Treasure managed to secure a big fan base who enjoyed the unique adventure tone of the film. This of course prompted a sequel and now seems to have lead to a third installment and a Disney+ spin-off series.
