Fans of the Attack on Titan manga will finally learn how the story ends when the final chapter is released this April. The series was created by Hajime Isayama and debuted in September 2009 in the pages of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. It has been published in monthly installments ever since and has been collected in 32 volumes published by Kodansha Comics. It was adapted into a popular anime series that debuted in 2013.

Attack on Titan tells the story of a world besieged by giant human-eating beings called Titans. The manga and anime both center around Eren Yeager, who lives in what is believed to be the last human stronghold. When two Titans breach one of the three walls surrounding the human territory, Eren sees his mother killed and joins up with his foster sister Mikasa and his friend Armin to join a group of soldiers called the Survey Corps. As they fight to protect the world from Titans, Eren discovers the power to become a Titan himself.

Bleeding Cool reports that the final chapter of Attack on Titan will be released in the May issue of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, which will be released on April 9. The 34th and final collected volume of the manga will be released on June 9. This year will also see an end to the popular Attack on Titan anime series based on the manga. The final season of Attack on Titan premiered on December 7 with an English dub premiere scheduled for January 10.

Isayama has spoken in the past about his struggles to produce the manga and meet his deadlines while concluding his Attack on Titan saga in a satisfying way. In a statement released alongside the announcement of the manga’s ending, Isayama said that he has been saying for about eight years that the story would be over in three years. “It’s been a very long time coming, but I hope you can stay with me until the end. It’s been a very long time coming, but I hope you can stay with me until the end,” he said. He added that he was never instructed by the editorial department to stretch his story, but instead was constantly rushed to finish it. “I’ll do my best for the final chapter so that you’ll be glad you’ve read it until now.”

While fans do not know exactly how the series will come to an end, Isayama has offered them a hint. A 2018 episode of the documentary series Jonetsu Tairiku focused on Isayama and his struggles to plot his series and live up to fan expectations. The episode also showed him laying out a draft of the final panel of the Attack on Titan manga. The panel depicts an unidentified man telling a newborn baby, “You are free.” The panel does not indicate any specific plot points of how Attack on Titan will end, but it has set off plenty of theories among fans over what it could mean.
