A shocking post shows Attack on Titan’s Eren Yeager in a frightening new artwork by Tokyo Ghoul creator Sui Ishida. The original artwork was revealed to Twitter by the horror mangaka, the same day as the final chapter of Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan and left fans feeling thrilled to see Eren Jaeger in this menacing pose.

Popular supernatural horror manga Tokyo Ghoul created by Sui Ishida was first serialized in Weekly Young Jump in 2011 and ran until its end in 2014. The story follows Ken Kaneki, a shut-in college student, who after unforeseen circumstances has become a half-ghoul half-human hybrid. The manga was followed by a sequel series Tokyo Ghoul: RE which was turned into season 3 in the anime adaption by Studio Pierrot. The mangaka’s newest horror series Choujin X premiered back in May on the Shonen Jump app and follows two young friends fighting to live in a world of supernatural creatures called Choujin.

The artwork – shared on Sui Ishida’s Twitter – came as a surprise to fans as it was posted the same day as the final chapter of Attack on Titan. The manga concluded back on April 9 in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine after 11 years of publication since its premiere in 2009. The anime – first airing in 2013 – ran for 4 seasons including Attack on Titan: The Final Season which has been announced for a part 2 coming next year. However, Ishida’s artwork not only reveals Eren’s character as the newfound antagonist of the series but there are a few easter eggs that act as giveaways to the manga’s conclusion.

The artwork shows Eren bearing his Titan Shifting eye marks in a frightening pose while wielding the Titan-killing blade that’s part of the Survey Corps’ Air Gear. His blade also shows a distorted Titan’s face in the reflection that looks a lot like the Attack Titan. He looks to be wearing his original Survey Corps’ shawl. The bloodshot red background and the bird reflected in Eren’s right eye are all foreshadowing the horrific events soon to be caused by Eren.

The Attack Titan and the blade are weapons used by Eren to fight the enemy Titans on Paradis Island. However, once Titans are no longer the enemy, Eren and the Survey Corps find a new enemy in humanity. Outside the walls, Titans are used as weapons of mass destruction, in an ongoing war involving Paradis Island, and Eren (with the strength of the Attack Titan) wants to put a stop to it. Sui Ishida’s Attack on Titan artwork depicts Eren not as the hero but as someone who “keeps moving forward” no matter the destruction it might bring in the end – a truly all-encompassing tribute to the series from Tokyo Ghoul’s creator.
