Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender love the series for the well-written characters, the exciting worldbuilding, and the compelling element bending system. But, what really drew fans in was the relationship between characters. While Katara and Aang might be the main couple to evolve from the show, Mai and Zuko are one that was actually together in the plot of the series itself. Fans were able to see this relationship develop and view some of the ups and downs of their dynamic.

While some people ship Zuko and Mai with other people, they are the canon couple, and there are many reasons why they were great together. In many ways, they are one of the most relatable couples from the franchise, too.

10 They Weren’t Dating When The Series Started

While Zuko and Mai are shown to have puppy love crushes on one another in flashbacks, they aren’t actually dating at the time of the series. Zuko had been banished since he was 13 and trying to find the Avatar, so they didn’t really have time to have a serious romantic relationship.

It’s not until Zuko comes back to the Fire Nation that they really begin their relationship, and this makes a lot of sense and doesn’t make their relationship feel too fairytale-like. It wasn’t as if they were together immediately and presented as if they were meant to be, the relationship developed more organically.

9 They Shared Social Circles

While in some movies and television series couples seem to happen out of nowhere, this isn’t the case with Zuko and Mai. They don’t have some random meet cute and fall head over heels, instead, they’ve known each other since childhood. They have known each other for years, but the dynamic changes as they get older and start to see each other in new lights.

While Zuko was banished for years, they do have the same social circles of friends and are both important members of the Fire Nation. It makes sense they would start to date since they have similar circles as well as backgrounds.

8 Because Their Personalities Had Many Differences

Sometimes couples in the media are way too similar in a way that makes them seem boring. And, while couples with similar personalities are realistic, there are also many real-life relationships where people have some key personality differences.

Zuko is much more outwardly emotional while Mai is more reserved. Zuko tends to care about things immediately while Mai keeps a lot inside. This contrast is realistic as most real-life couples also have a balance of traits as individuals.

7 They Didn’t Always Agree

While there are couples in both real life and in the media, such as Katara and Aang, that seem to get along most of the time, it’s just as realistic for couples to have some major disagreements.

While Zuko and Mai might get along overall, they don’t always see eye to eye. Zuko also starts to question the Fire Nation and his place in it, and this puts him somewhat at odds with Mai even if they don’t talk about it outright. They also handle conflict quite differently as Mai is more reserved and inward about her issues with others while Zuko tends to react angrily at others around him.

6 Zuko Handled Breaking Up With Mai Poorly

Zuko and Mai are an endearing couple, but they are also teenagers. They aren’t going to be perfectly mature or great at dealing with romance given their age. So, the way Zuko breaks up with Mai is a bit unfortunate. He leaves her a note instead of talking to her in person, and this clearly hurts her. However, since Zuko was sneaking away from the Fire Nation, it makes some sense that he didn’t want to talk in person. Given their ages, it rings true that Zuko wouldn’t know how to handle this complicated situation.

5 They Get In A Big Fight On Ember Island

When Zuko, Mai, Azula, and Ty Lee go on vacation on Ember Island, a lot of things are revealed about the various relationships at play. When the group is around the bonfire on the beach, a lot of emotions are released. Mai and Zuko end up getting into a bit of a fight as Mai is tired of Zuko’s anger at the world and Zuko is tired of Me being so emotionless.

It’s realistic for them to get into a disagreement like this given their personalities and the situation at hand. They are both under an immense amount of stress, especially Zuko as he tries to figure out his place in the Fire Nation again, and it makes sense this would boil up into an argument.

4 They Bond Over Shared Hatreds

While the show doesn’t feature all that many scenes of Mai and Zuko just being together as a couple, there are a few of them. In these moments, these two seem to bond over their attraction to one another as well as their general distaste for the rest of the world and other people.

They talk about not liking the color orange and complain about things. And, truthfully, this is quite relatable as most people like to talk about things they don’t like with those closest to them. They are able to relate to one another on shared disinterest, and given that they both have a tendency to view the world more negatively, they make a good match this way.

3 They Have To Work On Their Communication Skills

Zuko and Mai have dealt with a lot in their lives, especially Zuko. They are both trained fighters at young ages and the children of prominent leaders in the Fire Nation. Zuko, for his part, has had many traumatic experiences at the hands of Ozai and the rest of his family. So, it makes sense they don’t always seem to know how to communicate in healthy ways. They aren’t always honest with each other and do get annoyed with one another. While viewers don’t see them as adults, they likely would have learned better communication strategies after their teenage years.

2 Mai Chooses Zuko Over Azula

Viewers may not see all that many moments between these two as a couple, it’s clear that they do have feelings for each other even filthy are still figuring it all out. One of Mai’s best moments is when she betrays Azula in order to keep Azula from killing Zuko. She saves Zuko’s life because she cares about him more than she is scared of Azula. And, this moment shows that Mai does care about Zuko a lot. It also reveals that she has a lot more humanity and compassion, at least for people she loves, than Azula which makes her a good partner for Zuko.

1 They Break Up In The Comics

While Avatar: The Last Airbender ended after three seasons, the stories continued in various comics. In these stories, Zuko and Mai actually break up when Mai learns that Zuko has been keeping secrets from her, such as that he was continuing to visit his father. The fact that they do break up and that fans don’t know if Mai and Zuko get back together in the future is really realistic given their young age.
