When you have one of the greatest animated series of all time on your hands, there’s always going to be someone who wants to do something new with it. Such is the case with Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. A winner of numerous awards, as well as near universal acclaim from fans and critics, the series had only 61 episodes across three seasons and an equally loved sequel series, The Legend of Korra.

Back in 2018, Netflix announced they were working on a new live action series, which left fans simultaneously excited and scared for good reason. Another animated series might be better.

10 LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION: Improved CGI And SFX

Since the 2010 movie was released, Hollywood has, for the most part, gotten better at adapting animated properties like The Last Airbender into live-action. Better, but not consistently great at it. Still, the improvements in CGI and SFX over the last decade are apparent, and could only benefit the live-action series. It has all the potential to look amazing, which was one of the problems with the 2010 movie, though not the only problem by far.

9 ANOTHER ANIMATED SERIES: Sky’s The Limit

The beauty of animation is that the imagination of the people creating isn’t limited by reality. They can execute whatever vision they have for the story, and make it visually compelling.

This was a huge reason for the success of their previous animated series set in this world. Simply put, these stories have proven to be better suited to animation over live action. Why mess with success?

8 LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION: Netflix

The development and production of the movie was hampered by conflict behind the scenes, and a lack of creative input from the creators of the property. But if you can trust anyone to remake The Last Airbender as a live-action series, it’s Netflix. HBO would be on that short list, too. Still, Netflix has a track record of putting solid effort into these kinds of adaptations and has done good work in the past. There’s no reason to think they won’t again with The Last Airbender.

7 ANOTHER ANIMATED SERIES: The Last Airbender Film

Possibly the greatest reason to make another animated series is the 2010 The Last Airbender film, which is widely regarded as absolutely terrible. Everything about this movie went wrong from pretty much day one, with the big problems being the mostly white cast and a terrible interpretation of the story.

It missed the point of the animated series entirely. While there is a lot of potential for a live-action series to be great, fans have seen what happens when it doesn’t and it isn’t pretty.

6 LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION: A Great Story

The story arc of Avatar: The Last Airbender is truly brilliantly executed. It would honestly be interesting to see the characters play out that story in a live-action setting. Plus, they might have the opportunity to take that story in some new directions. With more than a decade since the animated series ended, the creators might have some ideas to refine the story. As great as the original series was, this might be a chance to make it even better.

5 ANOTHER ANIMATED SERIES: New Story

So far, it appears that the Netflix live-action series will be a relatively faithful retelling of the original animated series. How faithful it is remains to be seen. The question is, why?

Given the potential for new stories set in this world, there seems to be ample opportunities to develop a unique narrative. For example, delving into the world of Aang before he placed himself in suspended animation could be incredibly interesting for fans.

4 LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION: Second Chance

If nothing else, the live-action could be viewed as an attempt at redemption for a franchise which has taken many forms. Carrying the stigma around of having such a terrible live-action movie as part of said franchise does little to benefit it. While a good live-action series would not erase that mistake, it would go a long way to making people forget about it. At the very least, it would prove that The Last Airbender can be successfully adapted to this format.

3 ANOTHER ANIMATED SERIES: The Legend of Korra

Fans have seen what happens when a live-action version of The Last Airbender goes wrong. They’ve also seen what happens when a new story set in that world is done well, thanks to The Legend of Korra. The creators have already proved that they can catch lightning in a bottle twice, so there’s no reason not to take a swing at a third.

Animation has categorically proven to be the best medium for this world to be expressed in. It makes sense to continue the story through a new animated series over a live-action adaptation of a story that’s already been done.

2 LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION: The Original Creators Are Involved

Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra were both created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It has been reported that the duo have also signed on to work on the live-action series. This is good news as they were largely left out of the process of developing the disastrous 2010 live-action movie. The duo has a unique vision that they have a full grasp on so it only makes sense to have them involved, especially since fans have seen what happens when they’re not.

1 ANOTHER ANIMATED SERIES: They Could Work On This, Too

As great as it is that DiMartino and Konietzko are working on the live-action series, there’s nothing stopping them from working on an animated series. If they wanted to rehash the original story again with updated animation and an expanded story, fans will watch it. If they want to do something entirely new set in that world, fans will watch that, too. There’s honestly no reason why a new series has to be live-action other than for the sake of doing it that way.
