Batman & Harley Quinn May Finally Be Headed For Romance

Bruce Wayne may be used to dating lethal (and sometimes villainous) women, but in Batman: Curse of the White Knight the Caped Crusader seems to be building a romantic connection with his arch rival’s ex-girlfriend… the one of a kind Harley Quinn.

While non-canonical with the rest of the general DC Universe, Curse of the White Knight is a sequel to the critically acclaimed Batman: White Knight. Set in a slightly different Gotham City than what Bat-fans are used to reading, Batman isn’t entirely good, the Joker isn’t entirely bad, and Harley Quinn is vastly more intelligent than most people give her credit for (and the mother of Joker’s babies). Since the story isn’t technically canon and exists in DC’s “adult themed” Black Label umbrella, Murphy has the freedom to do things he otherwise wouldn’t be allowed to in a Batman title. For example, potentially hooking up Bruce Wayne with Harleen Quinzel.

In the story thus far, Batman and Harley are working together to stop the Joker’s “grand finale” act that will rock Gotham to its core. Quinn had previously helped Mr. J temporarily regain mental stability, which led to a healthy Joker/Harley love story, before his villainous side took back control. Now that the stakes have been raised in Curse of the White Knight #3, Batman unmasks himself before Harley to gain her trust, an act of intimacy that leads her to believe the Dark Knight might be sweet on her.

After unmasking himself, Bruce and Harley develop a working partnership to unravel the mystery of Joker’s plot, which involves an ultra-fanatical Azrael and a dark secret about the Wayne Family’s past. Harley repeatedly flirts with him, bringing up the time he bought her a dress (likely a reference to the episode “Harley’s Holiday” from Batman: the Animated Series) and remarks that Batman even knew her bra size. In the same issue, Batman delivers her twins in the bowels of Arkham Asylum. Needless to say, the pair are breaking down walls left and right.

Since Batman’s relationship with Catwoman doesn’t seem to be canon in the White Knight universe, giving the Dark Knight a dalliance with the former Clown Princess of Crime is exactly the type of twist readers should expect from Murphy’s R-rated take on Batman. With Alfred passing away in the previous book, and Batman’s relationships with his former sidekicks Dick and Barbara strained at best, having someone for Bruce to lean his cowled head on is probably a good idea.
