Curiosity Stares Down A Martian Mountain In New Rover Photo

NASA regularly shares photos of Mars from its many robots exploring the planet, and in this one from Curiosity, the rover shares an incredible glimpse at Mars’ rocky mountains and expansive sky. For a planet that’s as lifeless and unhabitable as Mars is, it’s repeatedly proven to be a thing of beauty. Between images of its large dunes, open ‘roads,’ and fascinating rocks, it’s hard to overstate how gorgeous the planet really is.

Taking all of these pictures are hardworking robots NASA’s sent to the planet over the years. Right now, three of the most active ones include Curiosity, Perseverance, and Ingenuity. As the robots make their way across the Red Planet, they regularly snap photos of their findings, share them with NASA, and they’re then uploaded for the world to see. Considering most humans on Earth today may never be able to visit Mars, this is the next best thing to experiencing everything the planet has to offer.

While many of the recent Mars pictures have been coming from Perseverance, Curiosity is just as much of a skilled photographer. This latest image proves exactly that. The photo above was acquired by NASA on October 11, 2021, from Curiosity’s Rear Hazard Avoidance Camera. The original file is black-and-white due to the technical limitations of Curiosity’s camera. What you see is a false-color version created by one of Screen Rant’s editors. The image is exactly the same — it just better represents the colors someone would see if they were on Mars looking at this with their own eyes.

An Amazing Look At Mars’ Large Mountains

The focal points of many Mars photos are large sand dunes or small rocks. These two things are everywhere on the planet, but so are imposing mountains as seen in this latest image. Looking closely, it’s clear that a lot of details are present in these mountains. They have a rough-looking texture, many layers of rock, and tower above the rest of the Martian surface. They look all the more impressive sitting against a dark sky. Even with some dust covering the lens in this picture, not even that can stop this from being one of Curiosity’s most impressive shots.

As great as this picture is, it’s just one of many excellent photos NASA’s shared recently. The past month has given us images of gigantic Mars dunes, haunting sunrises, and vast landscapes — with each one standing out for its own reason. Picture-taking may not be the only responsibility of these advanced robots, but they sure are darn good at it.
