Batman Tried to Get Wonder Woman Kicked Out of the Justice League

SPOILER WARNING for Wonder Woman: Black and Gold #1!

Batman and Wonder Woman have formed a close bond over the years, saving the world time and again as members of the Justice League. Sadly, the two heroes haven’t always had such an amicable relationship, as DC Comics just revealed that the Dark Knight once tried to get Diana Prince kicked off the team.

Bruce Wayne has never been the most trusting hero. Although his social circle has grown significantly since his first days as Batman, he still prefers to keep himself somewhat distant from many of his allies. This is especially true for those with superpowers, as the Caped Crusader considers the incredible abilities of others as threatening as they are helpful. Still, plenty of powerful heroes have managed to break through Batman’s walls, with fellow Justice Leaguers like Wonder Woman and Superman even knowing his closely guarded secret identity. Unfortunately, Batman’s paranoia has gotten the best of him at times, with stories like Mark Waid and Howard Porter’s Tower of Babel highlighting his distrust toward his teammates. There are plenty of other examples of Batman’s cynicism shining through though, including a recent confrontation with Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman: Black and Gold #1 is the latest in a line of dual-colored anthologies focusing on specific DC characters and features five short stories about the titular Amazon warrior. The third tale in the collection, “I’m Ageless” by John Arcudi, Ryan Sook, and Michael Heisler, explores Wonder Woman’s immortality and how it affects her relationships with mortals. In the middle of the story, readers witness a fairly heavy scene wherein Batman berates Wonder Woman about her long lifespan in front of several other members of the Justice League. He assumes that, given her extended timeline, she probably thinks of humans like insects and she doesn’t take her role as a defender of humanity very seriously. Of course, Wonder Woman denies this assertion and, in response, accuses Batman of projecting his own perspectives onto her. After this, she discusses how she doesn’t feel detached from humans due to their short lives, but instead realizes how precious they truly are. During these final remarks, readers see Diana visiting the grave of a former ally and friend from World War II, proving that she truly does care for the many people she’s come across.

Overall, this story does a great job at underlining Wonder Woman’s strengths while also pointing out one of Batman’s greatest weaknesses. Throughout her many adventures, Diana Prince has proven that she is one of DC’s most compassionate heroes, often acting as the heart of the Justice League. She believes in second chances for those who do wrong and feels deep anguish when she fails to save a life. Batman clearly takes a darker approach to heroism, often treating others with heavy skepticism. While this can be helpful in preparing for confrontations, it can also result in Bruce Wayne dehumanizing the people around him, numbing him to the value that they can bring. This is exactly what Wonder Woman claims in her retort, as Batman tends to treat people more like insects than she ever could.

Luckily, Batman’s accusations haven’t stopped him from forming a close connection with Wonder Woman. Even though he may initially look for the worst in people, he also tends to be a decent judge of character and can tell when someone is truly good. Additionally, Diana is fairly forgiving, so it’s likely that she didn’t hold a grudge against Bruce for too long after this interaction. It’s a good thing that the rest of the Justice League didn’t decide to remove Wonder Woman from their ranks though, because that could’ve certainly left the two heroes with some bad blood. Wonder Woman: Black and Gold #1 from DC Comics is available now.
