Batmans Son Has Reclaimed His Title As Robin

Warning: contains a preview of Robin #5!

In a new preview for DC’s Robin #5, Batman’s son seems to be reclaiming the ‘Robin’ title he’s been rejecting in recent comics. Instead of working with his father, Damian Wayne has been walking his own path, leading him to become a contender in the secret tournament held by the League of Lazarus, a mysterious sect that used to belong to Ra’s Al Ghul’s League of Assassins. However, the Bat-Family has found Damian in this new preview, seeking to bring him home to Gotham.

Previously, when Damian was still Robin and leading the Teen Titans, the young vigilante was seriously struggling with the death of the Bat-Family’s late butler Alfred, who was just as much a parent to Damian as Bruce was as his biological father. However, Batman flung himself into his work as the Dark Knight to process his grief over the loss of Alfred, leaving Damian alone in Wayne Manor. Seeing as how Bane killed Alfred right in front of Damian, it was incredibly traumatizing. In the absence of care from Bruce, Damian went down a dark path, choosing to leave the mantle of Robin behind and forge his own identity.

Now, the preview for Robin #5 from Joshua Williamson and Gleb Melnikov sees Damian in the nation of Corto Maltese after having spent some time training with his grandfather Ra’s Al Ghul. While he is investigating the League of Lazarus before the official tournament begins, Nightwing, Red Hood, Tim Drake, and Spoiler arrive to bring Damian home, and it’s here that Batman’s son has seemingly decided to reclaim the Robin name. But does Damian truly intend to honor that heroic title now that the deadly tournament has finally begun? Enjoy the synopsis and preview pages for the upcoming issue:

What makes this so interesting is that when Damian first started on his own in this new series, it seemed as though he had every intention of rejoining his mother and grandfather in the League of Assassins as the Heir to the Demon. However, it appears he’s had a change of heart as the series has gone on, investigating the League of Lazarus like his father would and now reclaiming the Robin title here with the other former Robins of the DC Universe.

It’s going to be interesting to see where Robin goes from here. While it’s quite likely that Damian will be returning to fight in the Lazarus Tournament, will he be forced to fight his family first, who seem determined to bring him home to Gotham? Damian’s rejection of the ‘Robin’ title was originally a rejection of his father, so his willingness to employ the title around the rest of the Bat-Family could be either a reclamation of this identity as his own or else a further mocking rejection of it. It’s clear the Dark Knight intends never to take on another Robin, so while Tim Drake is still using the moniker, it will be fascinating to see how Damian truly views the name now that he’s proved he’s no longer Batman’s kid sidekick, when Robin #5 releases on August 24.
