Beastars 10 Best Episodes Ranked According To IMDb

Netflix’s output of anime has been getting more and more impressive. From acquiring fan-favorite classics to distributing exclusive new releases, it’s getting to the point of there being too much to choose. Beastars is one of their most recent new releases.

An adaptation of the award-winning manga by Paru Itagaki, the series is part-romance, part-crime drama all set in a high school of anthropomorphic animals. The series has been a hit in Japan and a second season is reportedly due later this year. While fans wait patiently for the second installment, this list will look at the highest-ranked episodes, so far.

10 “A Wolf Is Born” – 8.0

It’s during this third episode that Beastars begins to kick into gear, so it’s not surprising to see it ranked so low. The previous two episodes were more focused on introducing characters and developing the world. The central characters are members of the drama club and in this episode the show they’ve been rehearsing. Lead actor Louis gives a genuinely impressive and moving performance despite hiding an injured leg. It’s an introduction to one of the show’s main themes; inner conflict struggling against an outer appearance.

9 “Two Sides Of The Story” – 8.3

Part of Beastars’ success is undoubtedly down to its skill at blending different story tropes and also different tones and moods. The central love story between Legoshi and Haru has been quietly brewing but up to this point, it’s mainly been through shy looks and awkward encounters. The show finds more of its sense of humor in this episode as it develops the chemistry between the central characters. Their relationship begins to form and its simultaneously comic and tragic nature comes forth.

8 “Blurred Vision” – 8.3

So far the show has remained isolated within the walls of the school. In this episode, the characters take their first adventure outside and stumble across the infamous Black Market. The show enjoys another genre change during this sequence, suddenly getting much darker.

The show is full of allegory and the market scene reflects the darker nature of the adult-world, as Legoshi and the others learn that the high ideals of the school don’t apply as soon as they leave.

7 “Caught Like Floss In A Canine’s Tooth” – 8.4

While the politics of a high school drama club may on the surface feel like very low stakes, Beastars is not afraid to reveal the hard and, sometimes, cruel nature of life at school. While the story of the episode simply follows the set up for a festival, it also manages to explore the more confusing sides to adolescence as Legoshi explores his feelings for Haru unable to tell if it’s a crush or something more sinister. The show’s central metaphor of predator/prey animals escalates this problem into a very real threat.

6 “In The Storm’s Wake” – 8.4

The final episode of season 1 serves more like an epilogue. With the main story (mostly) wrapped up the focus shifts more towards what will happen next; ramping up the conflict between Haru and Juno; starting Legoshi on his next arch. The joy of this episode comes from watching the characters and seeing how much they’ve developed since they were first introduced. The writing of the series is very strong with well-realized and complex characters who constantly fascinate.

5 “Below The Fur Coat” – 8.5

For a show that’s full of anthropomorphic animals there comes a certain point when some questions are raised. Luckily this episode opens by answering one of them; it follows the routine of a hen who is selling her eggs as a part-time job.

It’s a quirky and slightly surreal opening bit which explains that, while the characters are still animals, they behave with the logic of a human. Meanwhile, more backstory is revealed about Louis in typical tragic fashion: this episode perfectly epitomizes the show’s tonal balance.

4 “Let The Holy Grail Soak” – 8.6

Immediately following Louis’ star performance he is hospitalized and the drama club is forced to use understudies for the show, who include the shy Legoshi. This episode is so highly rated because it concludes the first arch of the show and finally forces Legoshi to come out of his shell. However, the show constantly subverts expectations, and far from this being a crowning moment for Legoshi, his performance soon turns into violence. This revelation of his nature is what makes this episode so memorable.

3 “Into The Lion’s Den” – 8.7

Arguably no character in the show emerges as wholly good or wholly bad. Nearly everyone has secrets and motivations they are desperate to keep hidden. However, while this is quite a plot-heavy episode it also finds room to break the audience’s heart. The show is constantly finding shades of grey, but that means that when a character makes an obviously bad choice, as they do in this episode, it makes the impact much worse. Some characters deserve redemption, while others shatter any chance they had of achieving it.

2 “A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing” – 8.8

A near-perfect episode and seriously satisfying conclusion to one of the main plot threads. Legoshi, determined to rescue Haru, breaks into a yakuza hideout willing to risk his life to get to her. As ever with Beastars the action can present one thing, while the story is able to discuss another. While Legoshi himself may be confused about the morality of his actions, there is undeniably a satisfaction in seeing him tear through men who are clearly more evil than him. It’s a cathartic release of an episode as Legoshi finally directs his rage at someone, rather than letting it fuel his anxiety.

1 “To The Neon District” – 8.9

Arguably the show’s real climax, this penultimate episode follows Legoshi and Haru as they find a place to stay for the night while they hide from yakuza. The budding relationship between the two has only been held back by one final secret. As Legoshi chooses to reveal it there’s a great sigh of relief from the audience. And yet, while the truths are revealed and life finally seems to be returning to normal, the episode ends on a further conundrum; now that Legoshi has faced reality, will he be able to accept it? A well-written conclusion to a well-written show, managing to satisfy its audience while expanding its story in the same moment.
