Benedict Cumberbatch Didnt Shower On Power Of The Dog Set

Benedict Cumberbatch didn’t shower on the set of his new movie, The Power of the Dog. Following his breakthrough role as the titular detective in the BBC series Sherlock, Cumberbatch earned his first Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of the cryptanalyst Alan Turing in the 2014 film, The Imitation Game. Cumberbatch is now best known for his role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s neurosurgeon turned sorcerer, Dr. Stephen Strange. Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme will have a prominent role in this month’s Spider-Man: No Way Home which will lead directly into his second solo outing, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The Doctor Strange actor’s most recent project hails from the acclaimed filmmaker Jane Campion, known for her Oscar-nominated writing and directing on 1993’s The Piano, though Power of the Dog is her first film in over a decade. Cumberbatch stars as a brutish yet charismatic rancher named Phil Burbank who inspires fear and awe in those around him, especially his meek brother George (Jesse Plemons) who brings his new benevolent wife (Kristen Dunst) and son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) home with him. The film’s cast also includes Thomasin McKenzie, Keith Carradine, and Frances Conroy.

Speaking to USA Today, Benedict Cumberbatch shed some light on the incredible lengths he went to embody the role of Phil Burbank. When he first arrived on set of the 1920s Western in New Zealand, the actor says he avoided showering or bathing entirely in an attempt to get into character, which Campion encouraged. This commitment to the role even extended to his costumes, as Cumberbatch asked the wardrobe department to not wash any of his clothes. This abhorrent smell became an important part of connecting to the “animal nature” of the character, Cumberbatch says.

My family had yet to arrive and I thought, “I’m just going to go for it.” But then she’d invite me out for sushi or a walk and I was literally emanating – I had a biohazard zone around me. It was not a good time to cuddle up to Cumberbatch and take a selfie.

Other than Cumberbatch’s refusal to shower, a few other members of the Power of the Dog cast also went to great lengths to portray their respective characters. Cumberbatch and Dunst refused to speak to one another on set as part of their efforts to stay in character. Though they probably had plenty to talk about, Dunst was likely thankful Cumberbatch kept his distance in between takes given the wretched stench that was presumably emanating from his person.

While he refused any on set, Cumberbatch has been showered with praise for his performance in The Power of the Dog. His aversion to hygiene has wholly paid off, as critics are predicting he will learn his second Oscar nod for Actor in a Leading Role. It helps that not showering is also integral to his role as Phil, who even refuses to go to dinner in one scene after his brother asks him to wash up. With so much attention on No Way Home, it’s worth checking out Cumberbatch’s performance in The Power of the Dog, which is now streaming on Netflix.
