Berserk Griffiths Reborn Band of the Hawk Is Reclaiming The World

Warning: contains spoilers for Berserk

Berserk’s Griffith may have transformed into the demon Femto to achieve his dream of acquiring his own kingdom, but he later returns to the physical world in what appears to be his human form, the “absolute” version of what he once was to lead the new Band of the Hawk. Though Griffith is the series’ antagonist, his return to the human world brings uncomfortable questions for Guts and his quest for revenge.

As a human, Griffith sacrificed the original members of the Band of the Hawk in the terrifying bloodbath known as the Eclipse to transform into a demon. Despite this terrifying new form, Griffith realizes that the most effective way to seize a kingdom is to assume human form to sway the minds of men. He achieves this by participating in an imitation eclipse, transforming into a “man” of no equal, the Hawk of Light.

Griffith’s time living amongst mortals as the Hawk of Light proves that he hasn’t lost his ability to manipulate and maneuver through the many intricacies of royal politics as he did before his ascension during the Golden Age. The genius of his earlier moves is later revealed in chapters 284 and 285 when he takes his first major step towards assuming ultimate, unrivaled control of Midland.

Griffith Ascends to Supreme Commander of the Midland Regular Army

Berserk Griffiths Reborn Band of the Hawk Is Reclaiming The World

When Griffith disappeared after the first Eclipse, the sovereign land of Midland fell into disarray as a rival empire invades and seizes much of its territory. Right after Griffith reappears as the Hawk of Light and begins rallying the people of Midland to his cause, the rival empire initiates a massive siege that would have sealed Midland’s fate had Griffith’s Band of the Hawk not swooped in at the final moment and sent their army fleeing.

It is in the immediate wake of this victory that Griffith announced that the Band of the Hawk is more than just a private troupe but is the regular army of Midland, an honor only bestowed on nobility. Griffith’s reasoning was that the duty of a kingdom’s regular army is to defend the kingdom and its subjects, and the Band of the Hawk had just proven more than capable in battle while the kingdom’s other royal armies led by Midland’s nobles had failed their people, a colossal failure that reduced the royal armies to nothing more than mere private military organizations.

The nobles retaliate by launching valiant efforts to discredit Griffith following his surprising proclamation. Their first sound argument is that this ascension cannot occur without the support of the noble family who disappeared following the Kushan invasion. But earlier on, Griffith had the foresight to save Midland’s Princess Charlotte who had been captured by the Kushan Empire. So when this argument is presented to Griffith, the Princess emerges in epic fashion and makes her own stunning announcement, proclaiming her betrothal to Griffith and naming him Supreme Commander of the Midland Regular Army.

Griffith Is Anointed The Savior of Mankind

This definitely throws the nobles for a loop, but they soon recover and quickly point out that the war against the rival empire actually transcends nations, meaning that Princess Charlotte, although powerful, does not possess the authority to make such a royal decree. It is instead a war of the Holy See, Midland’s highly influential religious organization, and therefore is a war of the gods. But, yet again, in another display of foresight, Griffith had already taken the initiative by collecting the Holy Pontiff himself beforehand, a man who, while the highest-ranking religious member of the Holy See, had gone through life with no passion.

Griffith knew at the time that the Pontiff regretted this personal failing, and took advantage of his miserable state by coming to him in a dream as the Hawk of Light with such holy grandeur that the awesome display kindles such a passionate drive in the once passionless man that he becomes obsessed with ensuring the Hawk’s ascent. So in response to the nobles’ argument in the present day, the Pontiff emerges, in equally epic fashion as Charlotte had, and announces that Griffith is their savior and the Hawk of Light. It just so happens that this name is already quite familiar to everyone else in Midland, as Griffith had also appeared to the entire population in a dream, forcing all of the nobles to immediately fall to their knees.

Griffith Creates A Utopia

As revealed in chapter 307, Griffith actually constructs the greatest city known to man called Falconia. The construction consists of more than just highly ornate carvings on such a massive scale never before seen by man. According to Rickert, one of the few survivors of the original Band of the Hawk, Falconia is truly incredible because it has sewers, running water, streets, roadways, walkways, excellent traffic flow, wonderous inventions like a firefighting barrel, giant baths, and water that actually flows through toilets.

Even beyond the walls of the capital, the surrounding lands provide an endless bounty that can be harvested year-round, an otherworldly phenomenon that transpired after Griffith defeated a massive demon. And by chapter 357, Griffith not only expands Midland’s territory for the first time in years but uncovers ancient ruins that would greatly help future expansion as they serve as the threshold to a portal that allows mankind to travel through the sky in an instant so long as Griffith or his powerful medium is present.

More impressively, Griffith later proves to be a forward-thinking ruler of his capital. In addition to accepting human refugees, Griffith allows enemy Kushan to join his cause if they so desire, and is able to achieve the insurmountable task of convincing mankind and the very demons that once hunted them to fight together, both effectively ending warfare between mankind and successfully integrating demons into normal society. Griffith is also the only nobleman who listens to and accepts Charlotte’s idea of educating orphans. His reasoning is that the kingdom cannot just depend on nobles, but needs children to fight for them. Additional support can also be gained by allowing the people to prosper and to stop separating the refugees from the general population as this only leads to discrimination.

All of this is not just a masterful execution of strategy and planning, but a way for the late Berserk creator and manga legend Kentaro Miura to introduce a difficult ethical question. Can a monster who has perpetrated one of the most utterly despicable acts imaginable ever be considered a hero? It’s an ethical dilemma that Rickert struggles with after first meeting Griffith since the Eclipse and Golden Age. Griffith is not only saving mankind from a literal hell on Earth but is in the midst of creating a better, and more just society, even by today’s standards, where mortals can flourish and live in harmony in ways never before experienced or thought possible. Griffith even, through the help of his medium, strips people of the archetypal fear of death. In truth, without Griffith, it appears as though mortals would never have achieved such an idyllic state, as made apparent by the 100-year war that ravaged Midland and the Tudor Empire. This is just one of the tough questions Berserk asks that don’t have an easy answer, which is one of the reasons Kentaro Miura’s epic is such a classic.
