On June 12, E3 2021 hosted Wholesome Direct, a 60 minute long showcase featuring indie games. Hosted by Jenny Windom, Victoria Tran and Derrick Fields, the event was designed to showcase small developers and their projects who wouldn’t get an opportunity to present at E3 2021 otherwise. Wholesome Direct shared exclusive game footage, developer interviews as well as announcements for over 75 indie titles.
Wholesome Games, the organization behind the showcase, started as a community seeking and curating games that inspired compassion, comfort and coziness. Their mission is to change which games are taken seriously, as frequently in the AAA space the most popular titles are gritty, dark, and full of violence. Wholesome Games, through Wholesome Direct, wants to showcase the rich storytelling and innovative gameplay that is also found in lighter games.
Many of the titles featured during Wholesome Direct are still in development with release dates coming soon, but some are already available on Steam. Still others were featured in multiple E3 2021 indie showcases, garnering a lot of excitement. 75 titles is a lot to sift through, so here are some of the best indie games featured at E3 2021’s Wholesome Direct.
Best Games of Wholesome Direct – Lake
Lake takes players back to 1986 as they play Meredith Weiss, an overworked forty-something, as she takes a two week vacation delivering mail in her hometown of Providence Oaks. The game lets players drive through rustic Oregon, getting to know the locals – almost like Stardew Valley without farming or resource gathering. At the end of the two weeks, players are faced with a decision: stay in Providence Oaks, or return to the city. Currently set to launch Sept. 1, a demo of the game is free to play on Xbox through June 21.
Best Games of Wholesome Direct – Yokai Inn
Also reminiscent of Stardew Valley is Yokai Inn. In this game, players restore an abandoned inn which hosts otherworldly guests each night. Players are responsible for all aspects of running the inn, from cleaning and maintaining the furnace to farming, fishing, cooking and mining. All art in Yokai Inn is drawn by hand. There is no current release date, but the game is being developed for PC, mobile and Nintendo Switch.
Best Games of Wholesome Direct – Cat Cafe Manager
Cat Cafe Manager is another indie building game. It’s a business management sim that allows players to adopt stray cats and try to find them a home while managing a staff at the cafe. Players can also get to know the locals and cater to different customer groups. There’s also a hint of mystery with a cat shrine in the nearby forest. A release date is coming soon, hopefully with confirmation of what consoles the game will be available to play on.
Best Games of Wholesome Direct – Hot Pot for One
This game gets points for being unique, as it pushes to embrace bittersweet feelings instead of pushing them away. An incredibly simple concept, players must make themselves hot pot, a meal that usually feeds six, for themselves alone on Christmas Eve. A short narrative at approximately 10 minutes long, players are scored at the end on how many memories they unlock, pieces of food they consume, and how much they throw away. Hot Pot for One is designed to combine the bittersweet, lonely feeling of being lonely on a holiday and the comfort familiar food can bring.
Honorable mentions include: Gecko Gods, Battle Cakes, Pupperazzi, Skatebirds and Book of Travel.
