As announced in yesterday’s Xbox Games Showcase, Destiny 2 will arrive on Xbox Games Pass along with all its expansions when Beyond Light releases later this year. This is a major coup for Microsoft and the green team, as Destiny has spent the entire previous generation siding with PlayStation (and even Google Stadia) for marketing deals and exclusive DLC. Bungie, the original creator of the beloved Xbox franchise Halo, seemingly wanted to expand its audience through a now-defunct partnership with Activision that saw multiple franchise releases, but the tide is shifting and Destiny 2 is now free to play. When players are more important than that initial purchase price, a service like Game Pass is too good to ignore.

Alongside the base game, Destiny 2 is coming to Game Pass with all of its various DLC expansions. This includes packs released when the game was published by Activision such as Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken, as well as the first under Bungie’s stewardship, Shadowkeep. Completionists will still need to acquire the game’s various season passes if they want everything, but these expansions give access to the vast majority of content. When Activision gave up the rights to the franchise to Bungie and the game shifted from a retail product to free to play, it fundamentally shifted much about the game’s progression and its business model. This continues with the upcoming release of Beyond Light.

During Xbox’s showing Thursday morning, Bungie showcased new footage from the upcoming Destiny 2: Beyond Light expansion. The game features a new Darkness element to wield, and players can now leap across wide gaps with ice platforming abilities. Of course, Destiny 2 is a looter shooter, not a Super Mario game, so the powers of Darkness also extends to the weaponry you’ll find as you leap across Europa and meet back up with Destiny’s own Cable, the Exo Stranger.

Outside of a new adventure on Europa, Beyond Light also brings back the Cosmodrome on Earth as a playable location and lets players challenge the Vault of Glass from the first game. During the initial stream about Beyond Light, Bungie introduced a content vaulting system to streamline the game’s included worlds. With this system, they’re able to reintroduce locations and activities from the original Destiny into the much-improved sequel for players who may have missed them the first time around. While some fans are not fans of reducing the game’s scope, others are just happy to relive old content with brand new gear.

No matter how successful its rivals are, it seems that Xbox will always be a great home for shooters like Destiny 2. There’s just something about the DNA of the console that matches with first-person combat games and the players who love them, likely stemming from the foundations built by Bungie with the original Halo trilogy. When Game Pass users get the chance to load up Destiny 2, it will be a homecoming for the Master Chief creators, and many may not want them to leave again for a long time. Here’s hoping that Microsoft can continue to build excitement for the Xbox brand as a whole through unique partnership – perhaps adding Master Chief to Super Smash Bros Ultimate would help with that.
